View Full Version : Intimacy on the trail

I know this could apply to hikers of both genders, but I feel more comfortable here. Next year my husband and I are thru-hiking sobo. I'm not sure about the best thing to do regarding post-sex cleanup: dedicated after-sex bandanna, condom and wet-wipes, just refrain between trail towns? Do you find that your libido significantly drops on long-distance hikes?

Thanks for replies, and offering a safe place to ask the question.

We were 51 when we started out - married 32 years. By nightfall we were just too damned tired and too damned dirty. There are hotels if you want to get to it. Shower up and then you're clean and ready to go. If our troops in the middle east can get by for days, weeks, months without it, you can get by between town stops.

Condoms and wetwipes are your friend :). Also it's nice for both of you to wash the area with some cold water and a little soap when you get into camp..if there aren't a lot of people around and you can find a spot to do it. Make sure you pee after, you don't want to get an infection out there!
You'll might want to limit it a bit to when you're in town, but I found that my libido wasn't decreased at all unless I did a 20-mile day or it was really freezing cold.

Bear in mind that a tent can provide visual privacy, but sounds carry just fine through those nylon walls. Unless you want everyone in the neighborhood to be with you in spirit, tent welllll away from other hikers.

At Trail Days, who can hear anything over the drums?

Actually, I usually hammock off by myself in a patch of poison ivy (which I'm not allergic to), and sleep like a lamb.

Nice thing is you're in towns pretty frequently. And several of the hostels even offer private rooms for married couples, but there are motels also. Might want to budget in for more stays in motels, honestly.

A thru hike provides many opportunities. Some sunsets can really be aturn on. When the weather is warm, the moon is right, under the stars can be a real experience, tent or not. You should try it under the stars. Be sure to know your surrounding area. There is alot of areas away from the usual camp sites. Your stealth abilities could be used to the advantage. No place better than on top of a bald. Will not forget on top of Elephant's Back, Yellowstone.

The Sound Of Music, the Sound of Sex....
Did a trip thru the Smokys as 13 yr. old, and my neigbors in a tent were having sex.
Being the young man that I was, I didn't have a clue. "What's that sound"?....As an older man, now I know! But it's something I'll never forget....thanks!
It's the mans job to do the clean up.

really? Im sure I dont know as much as my wife about the proper technique for cleanliness, specially in the woods.

Had fun as a teenager one weekend camping in N. GA mountains and the gfriend at the time didnt take proper care after the fact and I knew nothing about UTI's and infections. Nasty stuff and rule of mine now is too not play hanky panky with dirty hand and dirty...... If I ever to manage a thru Im sure the thought would cross my mind. ;) happy hunting

Never posted in the ladies forum, but saw the thread title and thought I'd weigh in.

My sex drive seems about the same or stronger whilst hiking, probably stronger when with my gal. Something about seeing her in trail runners and little hiking shorts with her tush swaying sensuously from side to side as she hikes... :-? Although I'm a young guy, so there's probably not much you could do to discourage my libido.

Besides, trail sex is great, don't limit yourself! We did the JMT together last year and it was a lot of fun to find some quiet little nook well off the trail in a beautiful alpine meadow or something. Some of the nicer camps/views we've discovered were found when scouting for a love makin' spot.

Anyway, I'd highly reccomend Wet Ones or other antibacterial wipes for a clean-up before and after. (Before to reduce chances of a UTI or similar condition due to unsanitary body parts.) Easy to pack out along with other garbage. A quick water rinse followed by the wipes seems to work best.

I might also add that if one of you carries a foam sleeping pad, they're easier to clean than an inflatable.

I will say, I think Bleach, for one, was respectful and actually provided information the original poster was looking for. It's not the worst thing in the world, having men post in the women-only forum. But you guys really need to use some common sense. Note that the original poster is new to WB. Also note that she mentioned -- twice -- wanting to post specifically in the women's forum because she felt more comfortable here. Under the circumstances, it is HIGHLY inappropriate to make posts about needing cold showers and whatnot. The next time you boys get all upset about women not wanting you to post here, please remember that posts like that are the reason why.

I disagree. It takes two to tango and maybe men DO have worthwhile things to say, despite the prejudice against them. My wife has interesting observations about sex in nature but since I enter this site under my profile, she felt disinterested to do so. Perhaps a little more inclusivity might benefit everyone.

Re-read my post. I didn't say men shouldn't comment here. I said that men should use their brains about what kind of comments they make in a forum that is clearly marked "women only." I said that comments like Bleach's add to the conversation, while comments about "needing a cold shower" are highly inappropriate.

Thank you, Pokey.

I am no prude. I teach a unit on sexuality to high school students. The topic CAN be handled in a straight forward, informative manner. Lurid, titillating remarks have no place.

Some folks are comfortable with both genders chiming in on this subject. Others are not. As Pokey has pointed out, the OP stated her reason for posting here--her comfort.

At any rate--I find that my libido is just fine on the trail. Working out and being active is always good for my sex drive, as long as I'm not overworking myself or spending lots of time hungry or cold or something like that. If you're enjoying yourself hiking I think you won't need to worry about your libido suffering.

And I'll echo what everyone else has said about trail cleanliness : o )

Hmmmm, I got deleted earlier for saying the same thing Dixi said.

What if I want to come to the female forums to ask a question about taking my wife or daughter backpacking? What if I had a question concerning buying their equipment? Since neither my wife or daughter are members here, they surely cannot ask that question. Banning men is not the answer. That would only be fuel to the fire. The answer is allowing men to post in a forum, respectfully as stated in the rules for the forum. Not censoring everything men say with the reason being "intrusion". Continuing to censor all the male comments will only add fuel to the fire and make it worse. Most of men can keep it within guidelines. And for crissakes, it's only walking, stop taking it so darned serious!!

Ok girls...what I've learned is simple. Hiking is an emotional, physicial, sprititual, and mental experience. If and when the spirit moves you to engage in activity..go for it. It maybe just the lift you need after a rough day or celebration of beauty and joining in with nature.
Nature is around us and in us and we go with the flow. A couple of baby wipes will do the trick for immediate clean up, followed by a quick wash with a soap up at potty call (again use a wipe for a wash cloth). As always becareful to rinse well with filtered water to prevent irritaion. I leave those "femmine" hygine products home. I discovered long ago they actually cause more problems. Nature made us in perfect harmony and "self - cleaning" if not interfered with.
As to the wise cracking YOUNGsters...ignore him.. He'll go away..Just like the class clown.. There are men who do have good advice and if they respectfully chime in in..fine. I value thier experience and information. I once had an "OLD" BSA leader whho told me "women don't belong hiking and camping" Whata do when you gotta "go"?" My reply.." YOU sir, pee on a tree..ever hear of a bird in the bush!" 25 yrs later I not only had earned his respect, taught HIM a thing or two :-) and earned my Wood Badge. Not only did he do the presentation then, but he is now my great supporter in my dream of thru hiking... I hope we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater! We can educate the crude, rude, socially unacceptable person, by our graciouness that we ladies are known for, :-)

IF I can ever get my city-boy hubby to go backpacking with me, I'll probably end up jumping him (full moons are a turn on for me-and no I don't have furry ears and a tail!). LOL. Not entirely sure what to do afterwards though, as again, even at home I end up with "surprise moist" between 10 and 45 minutes after doing it. o.o I suppose using a condom will help with that, though he won't like that one bit! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_method

In statistics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics), the delta method is a method for deriving an approximate probability distribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probability_distribution) for a function (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Function_%28mathematics%29) of an asymptotically normal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimator#Asymptotic_normality) statistical estimator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimator) from knowledge of the limiting variance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variance) of that estimator. More broadly, the delta method may be considered a fairly general central limit theorem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_limit_theorem).

I can only presume it makes the guy lose interest, so you don't have to figure out how to deal with intimacy on the trail ....

I find it interesting that a great number of AT questions posed to me by people are sexual in nature, including my girlfriend.

I tried to reassure her that I highly doubt there are single hikers looking to hook up along the AT. It doesn't even seem like practical behaviour.
