View Full Version : Remote Fueled "StarLyte" stove

I used the "StarLyte" stove burner as the basis of this remote fueled stove. The burner is 1/2 the height of the original StarLyte.
You can pour in 1/2 ounce of fuel directly into the stove and heat 2 cups of water for a quick heating.

For longer uninterupted heating of water or simmering of large quantities of food for groups you would connect the remote fuel source and the fuel would be fed to the underside of the burner via the fuel tube. The fuel tube remains attached to the stove to prevent wear on the tubes connection. For storage just coil up the tube as shown in the photos.

This is just a prototype just to show you whats in the works.
I'll show the fuel container soon. It has a micro adjustment to regulate the fuel. The adjustment is made inline at the fuel container for easy access during cooking. Regulating the flame remotely will be easy.

Weight of stove without tubing is 1.4 ounces. It's made of steel to withstand the heat as the flames pass the support legs. The support legs will easily support 2 gallons of water if needed.

The stove is versatile, boil two cups or 2 gallons. 2 cups without the fuel line hook-up, just dump in the fuel and light. The stove has the same fuel absorbing material as the original StarLyte for even distribution of flame to pot.I'll show fire under the stove as photos and video are taken.

Stove dimensions are:
2.75 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. The base is such that it will have minimum sinking into soft soil. Has a very nice footprint for support.

Parts are readily available for all DIY'ers. Just by looking at the photos you can see how easy it is to make at home. Those of you that have made the StarLyte are close to having a remote fueled unit.
When I have time I'll make a list of materials and where to obtain them.

Lighter model can be made by using the "Armour" brand aluminum can and the Fancey Feast cat food cans. The tin cans can be found in the "Bumblebee" snack pack as shown in the photo.

All stovies must be on the trails somewhere. feels funny talking to myself :-?

It's that way at home also. My wife never listens to what I say :banana

hoz is here, hi hoz, all is well.

I'm listening, too. Actually, with my kids I developed a list of a few words that make them THINK I am listening to them:

Really?
What? What!
Yes.
No.
Cool.
Whoa!
Wow!
Nice!
Works for 99% of our conversations.
Oh, is that a different type of tubing in the second video? It looks like toilet line. Nice!

Good to know there are still those that make their own stoves.:)

I used fiberglass cloth to sheild the fuel tubing on the video. The stove base remains warm during the stoves operation. Not much heat radiating downward. The hose protection is to teach safety to stovies;) I'm waiting on some protective sleeving to arrive in the mail before I do a video of the entire stove set-up from beginning to end. Actually I think I'll use the #2 stove to do the video. See one, see them all:banana

Yes, I wait till my wife is at work and then I do the "sneak" burn in the kitchen routine. If she finds out, I'm in deep dodo.:D

Makes me want to drag up the thread on "exploding Stoves" maybe there are recent stories to add.

She just walked in the room, gotta go before she looks over my shoulder and reads what I said.:banana

Hoz is back! I was in Madison Wi over the weekend at Canoecopia, the largest canoe exposition in the Midwest.

Next time you plan on a trip there let me know and we'll meet up and talk stuff:) I use the VA facilities in Madison. Just a hop skip and a jump from my location.

This is an update:

Found a source for a more durable fuel line that works well with the IV regulator valve. It's lighter weight also. This stove works well as you see it.

:cool:looks neat but I'm not sure what you hold the fuel in and how messy it is looks almost like the old soda can white fuel stove. But I'd give it a try keep up the good work.

The fuel line is what they use on gasoline powered weed whips and other small engines. I think it might also be used on rc engines.

The fuel container is a medical IV bag. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neI_mseZioA) The fuel line in todays comment has replaced what you see in the video. I'm waiting for parts to arrive to make an update on the stove you see in the video.

zelph btw. i'd prefer that black pot stand to the coathanger wire ones on the other version of the starlyte could drive a stake through the side for extra support

matthewski and StarLyte, I love the two of you to no end:banana

I like to tinker with stoves;)

I'm waiting for a video to upload so I'll post some photos of a fuel tube that I'm going to use the fits firmly into the fuel port on the side of the StarLyte burner. At the end of the tube there is a spring loaded injector that grips firmly to the receiving tube inside the fuel port. Makes for a secure and safe attachment for fuel injection. It's a Hurst linkage of sorts:D. Smooth action like the Hurst. A short length of Tygon fuel line will be attached to the tube along with the roller action drip regulator that will be attached to the soft sided IV fuel bag. The bag has been under test for over a month now and no sign of deterioation from the HEET alcohol fuel.

Here is the latest on the rigid fuel tube setup. Working ok, needs some refining. The photo shows the bayonet type connectors used. Thread Setter tool was used to create the fuel port. Gold plated electrical parts were used also as shown. One piece threaded into the stove port and the other press fit into the brass tube. More details comming tomorrow.

I used a collapsable bottle as my container and a shrader tire valve as the controling valve. I had to rush a little so my wife would not catch me in the house playing with fire:banana
