View Full Version : Amateur radio repaters in VA - Rt. 60-Rockfish Gap
Does anyone know what the coverage is like? What frequencies and where are they located?
What is cell phone coverage like in the area? Any specific spots that are good? bad?
Depends on cell phone carrier, but it mostly sucks. Va. 60 crossing nada on Sprint, Verizon a little better but not much. Probably OK at Rockfish Gap since it is fairly close to Charlottesville and Waynesboro, but you can't rely on it at all in btwn. 60 and Rockfish.

This web site has been helpful for me on Amateur Radio repeaters:
http://ham-shack.com/repeater.html
Thanks for the link MintakaCat. That just lists the repeaters in the state though. I have the ARRL repeater directory but what repeaters are worthy of trying? What is the general coverage of them?

Find the repeaters near where you will be hiking and see if any are run by an amateur radio club. If so, find some info on the club and ask them the question.
That's what I would do.

Nice to see hams out here. Extra class and VE here.

I am an Extra too, since Dec. 07. I got my General back in 2002 when the 5wpm was a requirement so I still have some code. I wish it was higher, I could pass the 20 now Im sure :D. I am not a VE yet, but I have been wanting to do that. I just haven't had the time and haven't had the determination to make time.
Anyway, I think I am getting some suggestions in other places I have put feelers so things are beginning to pay off. When looking for info - tap as many sources as you can! :banana

I left my HT in the truck when I hiked from Woody to Hogpen. I was bummed since I really wanted to try and hit some new repeaters. One of these days I'll try some HF. I'm working on a DC40 and it'd be nice to make some DX CW contacts from some mountaintop somewhere.
Advanced here since 85. Used to love running a small QRP Homebrew or a HW-8 with a G5RV especially on field-day.
