View Full Version : Sams Gap to Hot Springs, NC
A friend and I are considering section hiking from Sams Gap to Hot Springs in early April. Any info on the following would be appreciated:
Condition of the shelters? Any one to avoid?
Good campsites?
Water supply (or lack of)?
Any point(s) of interest we shouldn't avoid?
Thanks.

We did that section in March 07. Nice bit of trail. The shelters aren't great (though Spring Mountain shelter is very old and historic. Still wasn't all that nice though.) Not much water on the ridgelines, but the springs at the shelters were good. I think there were decent campsites near every shelter. The long exposed rocky section south of Jerry's Cabin was very cool.

GA>ME 2019Be sure to grab water at Flint Mountain Shelter. The Bald Mountain ridgeline can get dry going into the summer.
But I would say Little Laurel is the smallest and oldest shelters on that section of trail. Jerry Cabin is an older shelter, but very popular with hikers.
Camp sites. The vista south of Frozen knob is great. Great view of Big Bald Mtn. Shelton Graves is big because of the history of it. Forget the campsite on Rich Mountain, go camp at the firetower.
Coldsprings Balds/Big Butt. Shelton graves. Rich Mountain firetower. But I think the exposed trail is the best thing on that route.
