View Full Version : SOS...SOS...SOS...I need help !!!
EvilCapitalist 03-19-2009, 23:51 I met a Southbounder this afternoon (from ME to Front Royal, VA during the winter !!!) in Raphine, Va who is wanting to go to Springer or Amicalola to start Northbound with everyone else (says he's bored) ... I am giving him a ride ... but I have a delivery in Atlanta, GA and I don't have time to get off the Interstate and give him ride to springer in a tractor-trailer ... I can get him to Commerce, Winder, Jefferson, or any of these exits... if someone can get him to springer...
please call me anytime @ "phone number deleted" .... We will be in commerce around noon or 1 pm tommorow ... that is friday the 20th of March ... please call me so we can help this guy out. Thanks.
EvilCapitalist 03-20-2009, 15:06 Fellow hikers:
I dropped off Eric at the QT truck stop in Pendergrass, GA. This is I-85 Exit 137 - it crosses GA 15/US 129 which runs from Athens (boooooo !!!) to Gainesville.
If you're coming from Athens or Augusta, GA, please give this fellow hiker a ride to Springer or AFSP. I took him over 400 miles, surely one of y'all can get him the other 60 miles. I see that near 100 of y'all have looked at the thread.
His phone number is 919-428-1111 if you want to call him. His name is Eric. You see my number above if you need to call me for directions.
Thanks, and have a great weekend.
EvilCapitalist 03-22-2009, 08:37 I called Eric back friday night and he said he had gotten a ride to springer. Got 0 phone calls and 0 replies from the 204 people who viewed this thread. All I can say is that I hope I never need help from any of y'all b/c it WILL NOT BE FORTHCOMING. Will the mods please remove this thread now???

have you ever thought that no one was going his way that viewed this thread?
4eyedbuzzard 03-22-2009, 09:15 Everybody here must have forgot that hikers are ENTITLED to rides I guess. Maybe that's why they call it hitchhiking. If ya aren't LUCKY enough to get a hitch, you're hiking.
I woulda totally helped out... if he were in PA, Jersey, NY or CT.

I thought about picking him up, but that's a 7 hour drive for me, guess I shouldn't be so thoughtless.
MintakaCat 03-22-2009, 09:36 I thought about picking him up too, but I first read about this Friday morning. A little late for me to bail from WORK to go get this guy.

We can give him a ride to Katahdin. Does that help?
EvilCapitalist 03-22-2009, 10:20 No need to respond now people ... no one needs a ride ... funny, I call y'all out and y'all get all upset about it. 208 views and not one response though when the man needed a ride.
john gault 03-22-2009, 10:23 It's the american way...

If ya aren't LUCKY enough to get a hitch, you're hiking.Never said anyone was entitled to a ride - but, 208 people viewed the thread, AT THE EXACT TIME OF YEAR WHEN EVERYONE IS STARTING THEIR NB HIKES, and no one from Atlanta, Athens, the SC lowcountry, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and points west going near or through Pendergrass, GA....
right...
I guess trail magic stops at the trail heads.
BlazeWalker 03-22-2009, 10:26 Give it up buddy.
john gault 03-22-2009, 10:27 Yeah, where's the Freeway magic
I imagine the thread had a lot of hits since it was an SOS... need help. I like to think that a lot of the folks who viewed it were the type willing to help. I wasn't in the area at that time, so couldn't... but, at least I looked to see if I could help.

How do you know that any of the "208 views" were by people from "Atlanta, Athens, the SC lowcountry, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and points west going near or through Pendergrass, GA...."?
Seems to me you got him to a place where if he just stuck out his thumb he would have a 99% better chance of getting a ride than through an internet forum where 99% (+/-) of the participants are from somewhere not even close to where you left him.
I'm sure he thanks you for getting him there, as you have acknowledged he did get a ride after you left him out. That's often how hitchhiking works: Get a ride to Point A, another from Point A to Point B, another from Point B to Point C, and eventually you get where you want to be. Getting a ride via the internet sometimes works if you start looking for one weeks or months in advance, but hardly ever works if you post same-day-as-needed. If you wanted to get a ride for him that fast you would have likely had more success by using CB radio channels.
Serial 07 03-22-2009, 11:50 evil, you were my hero until you turned evil...i'm in chicago man and viewed the thread...next time, just take the good karma of your actions and leave it at that...
wrongway_08 03-22-2009, 12:14 Just because so many people read the thread, doesnt mean they could help out - even if they are from that area.
Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesnt. if it works out that we can help, great - thats what we are here for.
If it doesnt work out and we cant help, well at least you did the right thing by posting this and hopeing someone could help.
I am glad he was able to get a ride and it all worked out. Seems somehow things work out for us hikers and we are rarely left sitting for long.
Hope the trip goes well.

Its hit or miss getting help with a ride. I'm guessing that most of the people who read your thread were too far away to help at the moment you asked for help. Many hikers have received help from the people on this thread and many more will. Hikers always have to have enough funds to hire a ride to the trail head when they start off. They just can't put it on us if they can't find a rid when they need one. Its hit or miss but I like to think its mostly hits.
Panzer
trailangelmary 03-22-2009, 13:03 Glad to see that Eric aka Z found his way to Springer. I knew he would one way or another. Good guy. I wish him the best on his flip flop.
mweinstone 03-22-2009, 13:33 thank you mr evil for helping a brother hiker in need.
MintakaCat 03-22-2009, 14:54 So, if I read your post correctly, you took this guy 400 miles because you were already going that direction. Basically, it was convenient for you. But you couldn’t take him the last 60 miles because it wasn’t convenient for you. You had a delivery to make in Atlanta. That’s understandable.
It could be, that the same reason you couldn’t take him to Springer is the same reason the other 208 people couldn’t, and that is that they had commitments too.
Lighten up. The important thing is that he got there. Hikers are very resourceful, they’ll get there one way or the other. You don’t have to sweat the details with these folks.

Now that's just mean:D
camojack 03-22-2009, 18:05 I guess I'm just a no good, selfish S.O.B. for not dropping everything and giving someone a ride to Springer.
(Never mind that I've been working 7 days/week and it's a 12 hour drive)
Yes, I looked at the original post when I saw the "SOS"...but let's (try to) be realistic here.
Luxury Bullseye 03-22-2009, 18:28 I'm really at fault here; I viewed this thread 208 times.

Basically this is all Camo's fault.
Also, Mr. Evil, while it was a good deed for you to take a brother hiker so close to his destination, that doesn't make any one of the 208 viewer's responsible for your hissy fit that they couldn't close the deal. The brother made it there anyway. Ummm . . . that's way too easy a concept to not be able to understand.

Just now saw the thread, hook me up with a time machine.
