View Full Version : Ideas for recycling a tent???
freefall 03-20-2009, 02:41 I have a tent that I would not pay anyone to take and I am looking for ideas for recycling it. It leaks live a sieve and has since day one and has a couple of seams that are separating. It is made of (I assume) nylon taffeta with a coated floor. It has bug netting with an attached rain fly and is sold as a two man tent but closer to 1 1/2. The zipper is sorta half-domed and in decent shape/ still works.
I've already thought of making some stuff sacks with it but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas???
Thanks!
Make a small parachute for gently dropping your pack off of ledges. That way you don't have to carry it all the way down.
You could also make a sail to mount to the top of your pack so you can use the wind to gain an extra couple of mph.
Hikes in Rain 03-20-2009, 06:10 It's an old friend? Viking Funeral. (http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Viking_Funeral) Be sure to play Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries.
mweinstone 03-20-2009, 06:21 set it up and spray it with polyurethane in and out real thick like. wala! doghouse!
Someone might still want to try it out to see if they like the shape and size.
If they do they might repair it or make or buy one similar.
Some other ideas:
Stuff sacks, overmitts, gaiters, sockliners, rain hat, bivysac, poncho, cheap material for learning and practicing to sew with nylon.
I made a leaf bagger out an old nylon tent...it really worked and served as a prototype for an improved design I'v used for years.
Ox97GaMe 03-20-2009, 09:58 you could make a pack cover or lightweight wind jacket. I have found that NickWax works pretty good as a waterproofing agent without eliminating breathability of the fabric.
what about just cutting out a bathtub floor and sewing some noseeum on the top 3/4 of the tent?
Glebbber 03-20-2009, 13:21 Set it up in your back yard as a storage shed / clubhouse.
middle to middle 03-20-2009, 13:51 I second-- PITCH IT !
Funkmeister 03-20-2009, 13:51 Set it up outside and harden off your garden plants you've started from seeds before planting them. What, you don't have a vegetable garden? Then give it to someone who does. Or...start gardening. Or...how about a few plants in buckets? I had a bucket garden for years when I lived in small apartments.
The pack cover sounds interesting, too.
take-a-knee 03-20-2009, 13:55 Cover for a riding lawn mower, I have the only goretex lawnmower cover I'm aware of.
johnnybgood 03-20-2009, 19:56 .... or cover for outdoor grill/smoker.
GrinchMT 03-21-2009, 15:16 We've used old rain fly's to make stuff sacks and beaks for tarps. The No see um sometimes can be hacked together for a light bug shelter inside an AT/LT lean-to.
If you cut it apart to do something with the fabric, save the zippers. The long ones are usually expensive, and you never know when you're going to want one for some project.
make a big kite out of it, or a sail for your next canoeing trip....
UnkaJesse 03-23-2009, 15:37 Save it for next Halloween. You could put the candy bowl in the back and make the kids crawl in. Then you could scrape something on the outside and get all Blair Witch on 'em.
'''I'm so scared"........
Many Walks 03-23-2009, 17:07 Give it to Goodwill or someone with kids who would enjoy it for summer shade playing in their back yard.
RevoRunner 03-31-2009, 19:25 What about a gear hammock?
phenimore 04-07-2009, 09:54 Make a gatewood cape.
Kids love tents to play in; find some kids to give it to.
I had an old three person tent that I set up in my girlfriends living room filled with pillows and made a romantic getaway dinner... made for some good dessert! ;)
