Just got back from a week long, @125 mile walk from the Colorado River at the bottom of Grand Canyon (elevation 2,500') to the summit of Mt. Humphreys, Arizona's highest point at 12,633'.

Along the way I used some trails within Grand Canyon, about 70 miles of the Arizona Trail, and a couple days of cross country hiking due to no trails going where I wanted to go, or because I was in snow. The route I put together ended up working fairly well. Overall, it was a really fun and diverse hike and I got to hike in and experience a lot of different things in the short time I had- Everything from bare feet and temps in the 80's, to crampons and chopping steps across snowfields.

Most of the miles were across the flat and arid Coconino Plateau which has very little water and a lot of cows, and unfortunately I also had Abba songs stuck in my head all week, since I hitched up to Grand Canyon from Flagstaff with a Romanian couple who were really big fans.

But aside from this, it was a great hike and I thought I'd share my pictures from it. Most of the pictures have captions beneath them elaborating on the hike and other things.

If you're from the area and would like to do this hike, I'd be glad to share info on the route I chose, water sources, and assembling a workable gear list which is a bit difficult due to the extreme range of conditions you might see. Just send me a PM.

Wow, that sounds like an awesome trip. I'd actually be interested in checking that out for my next year's spring break.

Great job, I though of you once or twice whenever I saw the SanFran Peaks over the last week or two.

So you went up up Grandview... and down New Hance?

I went down to the river via Grandview/Tonto and up the same way. I didn't know how much snow/ice would be on the trails near the rim and Hance didn't seem like it would be a good idea if any significant slippery stuff was around. I didn't pack crampons, since I didn't want to then carry them across the Coconino Plateau.

I also had to get my backcountry permit before hitching up to the Canyon, and I figured exiting Grandview would at least allow me to carry water out just from Page Spring if I couldn't find a good source on the rim and didn't want to cache- As opposed to trucking water all the way up from the river if I went up Hance, for example.

Plus, Horseshoe Mesa is just so damn lovely... magic.

You should come back and day-hike it, there's a lot to explore there. Excellent views from the tips of both arms, a huge, natural cave on the west side, and I've been to the summit of that butte in the center of the mesa - it's not all that hard to get up there.
