I've been using an MSR Sweetwater for years. I like it.

I see lots of other stuff out there that's lighter than my MSR Sweetwater. I'm kind of picky about the taste of my water, and I like the taste of the Sweetwater just fine.

Any big reason I should consider switching? If so, to what?

i wouldn't encourage you to switch if you like your sweetwater. but i'll be you can't tell the difference b/t water from it, and one from a pur hiker.

Probably not - but the weight is also similar. Well, maybe not, I should weigh my Sweetwater, it's 3-4 years old and probably heavier than today's models ....

i carried a sweetwater in 99' GA-ME and a pur hiker in 02' 03' GA-ME. the water might taste the same but the pur/katahdyn is a much superior filter. larger pour size allows much faster pumping. the hiker does not clog and need cleaned every day like the ceramic filters. and unless they retooled the MSR mini-works? you might be able to field strip it,but it pumps slow as s*** i can pump 3 qts in the time the mini-works can pump 1 qt. carry your sweet water and save money, just don't filter out of real nasty water sources and you'll be ok

I have the MSR mini works and have used it for about three years until the ceramic filter broke in the smokes and clogged the filter right up. Thanks to the hikers who gave me the iodine tabs i was able to finish the hike into Hot Springs. Now I own the Sweet Water and it seems lighter and may even pump faster pluse there is no ceramic filter to break if it is accidentaly droped I havent used it on any long hikes but that is soon to change if all goes well
