Hey folks!

Just checking in to say that Patrick "Cat" Gallagher (AT '01) and I will be hiking it pilgrimmage style on the Camino de Santiago in Spain from June 20-July22nd. Was wondering if anyone else is going to be doing the same or similar?

Muchas Smoochas,
RG

Awesome! I did the Camino de Santiago in 2006. Studying abroad in Spain right now, I will be on the Camino Portugues route in early June and then maybe doing the five days from Santiago out to Finisterre after that, but will be back in the US before you arrive.

Gah! Would have been great to meet someone who knows what's going on over there. I hear Pilgrims are just as interesting as thru-hikers. ;)

Rollergirl, if you have any questions about the camino, probably just easiest to email me at atsquires@wm.edu

The Camino is fantastic. It literally is a string of day hikes. Bring a camera. I really enjoyed it and the wine. :)

Well, the the Camino de Santiago or the Way of St James is historically one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during medieval times. Now, Catholics still walk it for relgious reasons and non-relgious folks like me walk it to experience a culture in a less touristy way than, say, hanging out in Barcelona and hitting all the trendy spots.

In order to walk the trail and be treated like a pilgrim, you have to receive credentials--similar to getting your day pass to hike Mt. Whitney. Pilgrims get to stay, like AT thru hikers, at cheap hostels along the way, get special rates on food, and develop a community of sharing along the way.

At least, that's what I've been told. I'll let you know if "pilgrimmage style" ends up being as I imagine it to be!

Will you be keeping a Trail Journal? I briefly met a man trailnamed Turtle at Trail Days last year who had walked it and his stories sounded fascinating.

I'll post a link if Patrick and I decide to update a trail journal...most likely, we'll use my Facebook photo album to tell the tale...I'll post the link when its finished!

Its the one pilgrimage I feel compelled to do someday. Not sure why.
Something about the way it ends on the coast of the Atlantic.
Maybe also because of the history of the region, with Basques and Celts and all that.

We've been talking about doing this, but a little later in the year, like early September. We were going to do a couple of weeks on the AT but the travel bug bites hard and won't let go.....we haven't had a "big trip" this year (i.e. overseas) and thought this might be a way to go on one for not a lot of money.

With luck you'll run into Bob People somewhere out there.

Have a great trip!
