View Full Version : Eastern Summits Trail
Hi,
There was an article in Backpacker magazine some years back of a proposed Eastern Summits trail that was to run some 100+ miles along the eastern section of Adirondack State Park. over a whole bunch of 4000 foot peaks. I have never been to it, and haven't found any information on it from google searching.
Anyone know if this trail exists, may exist some time soon, or if it was all a pipe dream?
If you find any info on the web please send me the link.
Thanks,
DavidNH

Pipe dream.
I would imagine the response of the local trail folks, DEC and APA peeps would be, "***?"
Too much red tape to get approved to cut new trails, plus, a near physical impossibility without superhuman abilities.
But it came out of Backpacker, so whaddya expect?

The asterisks do not indicate bad language, therefore the Chinese filtering system here cut it out:

I found this here (http://www.adirondackexplorer.org/ump.htm):
EASTERN SUMMITS TRAIL Tony Goodwin, author of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s guide to the High Peaks, proposes creating an 80-mile hiking trail from Lake George to Poke-O-Moonshine, crossing about two dozen summits in the eastern Adirondacks. He sees it as an alternative to the Park’s only long-distance route, the Northville-Placid Trail, which sticks to low terrain. Critics argue that the trail would spoil the wild character of peaks that now can be reached only by bushwhacking.

The lower link goes to a nice article outlining the plan and the guy behind it (http://www.adirondackexplorer.org/aeasternsummits.htm).
But there's no date on the article, so there's no telling what's the what.
There's probably not much political will behind this project. If it proceeds at all, it'll probably get "studied" into oblivion.

There's a real nice series from the Garden (near Keene). It goes over SawTeeth, Gothics, Armstrong, Upper and Lower Wolf Jaw. If you leave a car at the ADK Lodge it's a multiday loop and you can take in Iriqois and Algonquine (both spelled very badly) or Big Slide in the other direction. You really don't need a specific trail as there is a spiderweb between most of the high peaks. You can also connect many stunning lakes if you want to avoid mindless peak bagging.

That's true but I thought they were going to use N-P.
