I'm pondering, nay, considering hiking the AT. Over the years I've hiked parts, but never seriously contemplated hiking the entire AT as a life goal. I'm curious about your experiences - both good and bad - if you don't mind sharing. Here is a poll:
- which state
- which trail
- the scariest/worst part of it
- the most inspirational/best part of it
(This may have already been done... can't find the thread... indulge me.)
P.s. I'm also terrified of heights. In Texas there is a hike up to the highest point on Guadalupe Peak at 8,700 feet. Mostly narrow, rocky trails, with no cables, guardrails, etc. At one spot, continuing on required a scramble over a rocky bald with little vegetation to block the view of the rocky face. Fifty feet from the peak presented sloping rock outcrop used as giant steps. Some (actually Most) of the hikers went on through with no problem. I sat below these "steps" terrified for thirty minutes before trying. Hey, but I made it to the top and have photos to prove it!
