I was bored, and knowing that idle hands are the devils workshop, I disassembled my PUR Hiker Filter (model from about 8 years ago looks like what is sold in stores today) and weighed the components.
Always interesting how you can shave weight on supposedly "complete systems".
Original Packaged Weight:
140g - Plastic Casing + Pump Handle
134g - Filter (167g when saturated with water)
34g - 3ft plastic In-Hose
34g - 3ft plastic Out-Hose
22g - Plastic end piece ("sinker") on In-Hose
25g - Original PUR sil-nylon bag
~0g - Foam float and sponge pre-filter
--------
389g (13.7oz) = Total Original Weight
Modifications:
(-34g) - I plug my PUR directly into my drinking bottle hose, eliminating the "Out-Hose"
(-22g) - Eliminate "sinker" and use rock, finger, toe...
(-13g) - Use smaller sil-nylon bag (weight 12g)
---------
320g (11.3oz) = Total Modified Weight
Savings = 69g (2.4oz)
