Just met Captain Max, 76 years old doing a small section of the trail this year. Retired Army, 35 years. He just hiked out heading north this morning, if any of you run into him say hey to him for me..........

Springer to Virginia is a "small section" of the trail?I was talking with a hiker on the trail today near Woody Gap and I asked him how far he was going? He answered that he was "only" going to Harpers Ferry. Seemed pretty darned far to me, but, like in the quote above,I guess everything is relative.

He's retired Army. They have very different views on what's a reasonable pack weight, etc.
He told me he was doing a fourth of the trail this year. Then he will have completed all the sections.
