My friend and I are planning to hike some of the AT starting in Damascus VA SB in July. We are newbies on the AT and would have to do 2-3 day hikes at a time since we both hike around our hubbies schedules.

You know, when I hiked through that area in 2008 on my thru-hike I do not remember anything spectacular about the hike into Damascus. What I do remember is that the trail in this area is that starting at atkins, either hiking from there and going South into Damascus, or going North up towards Parntership shelter has some really spectacular things going for it. There are the grayson highlands which include wild ponies, fields which are very green and full of wild flowers and cows; I mean you really can't ask for more beautiful hiking... I guess if it were me and I had a few days to spend hiking on the AT, I would spend it hiking in the grayson highlands if you haven't experienced it already! Maybe this won't be useful for the trip you're taking this time, but definitely keep it in mind for the future because I have to say that the stretch from Damascus to Pearisburg was one of my favorite hikes on the whole trail! Have a great time out there!!

Good to know! Thanks. Question, I live in Kingsport, would like to start close by and head south... where'd be a good scenic start then? Hampton?
