Probly not as long as you've got some layer clothing, a decent sleeping bag and a tent. . .
Winter clothes yes. Spring clothes no. :D
I meant you should ditch your winter clothing, but not your spring clothing.
It is spring after all. What constitutes spring clothing however, varies. :D

The conventional wisdom is to wait until Pearisburg, which is 10 days up the trail and past the 5000' Mt Rogers area. But it all depends on the time frame when you arrive. Early May? Keep some warm clothes. Mid June? You'll likely have ditched your winter gear already.

Be ready for at least very cold rain and freezing nights until mid-May. I sent home my winter gear at Pearisburg in early May last year and regretted it.

this is a loaded question because it depends on when you will be going through.

I remember the winter of '79 as one of the worst in northern Michigan since the late sixties. I don't recall if the summer was any cooler than usual or particularly late in arriving, but if the appalachians were anything like Michigan that year, it was an anomoly for sure.
