Have any of you section hikers out there ever left a car at the Mohican Outdoor center??

Are the any places in NJ that are safe to leave a vehicle and might also be close to a town that has bus service for the return trip??

One of the reason's I dislike section hiking so much is this whole car safety issue and how the hell do you get back to said car....i

On the Jersey side of Delaware Water Gap there is parking, just let the rangers know how long the car will be staying. There is bus service on the PA side of DWG, the station is not far from the trail. Could be closer parking than the Jersey side, I don't know.

Thanks I'll check that out. Wonder if the church in PA would let me leave the car there?? Might be safer there, maybe not.

I typically leave my car at the AT lot in DWG and hike across the bridge into jersey. I have never had problems with vandalism. To get to lot, enter town and take 611N. Make a right at AT crossing sign at the deer head inn. Parking lot is first street on the left. That will get you in a safe place and only a short walk across I-80 bridge. Last time I left my car at MOC I had a friend that works there watch it for me, but that was a few years ago and he no longer is there. Never hurts to ask though.

Agree and with the popularity of the trails on the NJ side, the lot is actually quite busy and thus not being isolated, it is not likely subject to vandalism. I believe the outfitters in DWG will shuttle in most of this area. I have used this lot several times as well as the more isolated AT lot on the PA side of DWG. Both have worked well. There is plenty of parking at Mohican so they probably would not mind.

As of a couple of years ago, the church specifically prohibited hiker parking.

I sectioned hiked that area and based out of mohican. If they let you just park the car, it would be safe. I know that they have a phone to inquire.

I think that your car would be safe at the state park office near Sussex, and in Vernon at the church. I would call the church first because they cater to thru hikers, and cars confuse them. I enjoyed NJ. I have a better appreciation for the state once I walked it. One of my favorites.

Mohegan Outdoor Center is an AMC facility. I'd expect that it is as secure as any full service AMC facility.

Mohican Center had hiker parking and a hikers hostel several years ago. There is a caretaker on site all the time and I wouldnt worry about parking.

BTW I had the short section between DWG and the Mohican center to fill in a few years ago, due to a injury. I had a tight schedule so I hired a cab to take me from DWG back to Mohican center. It was right around $50 and the cab driver had no clue where the place was, luckily I had a map but it wasnt obvious.

I stayed at MOC when I hiked through in 2002. It is so much easier being a thru-hiker...:sun

Thanks for all the input. Now get off those computers and go for a hike or a walk. ;)

If you'd like to check out other options for NJ AT access, try this site: http://rohland.homedns.org/AT/State/state_menu/at_state_menu.aspx?id=3

This is a page from http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org - an AT parking/access database.

I left a car across the street from that hostel in DWG in PA last year. Is that the church? There is a parking area across the street from it where the trail crosses the road, had no problems for the week.
