Bike! Walk! Northwest Georgia is sponsoring a talk, a hike, and a meeting on the Great Eastern Trail this Sunday, on Mothers' Day. The events will take place in McLemore Cove, just outside of LaFayette, Georgia. If you are interested in the Great Eastern Trail and are around NW Georgia on Sunday, come on by.
Bill Moll
2:00 PM - Tom Johnson, Chairman of the Great Eastern Trail Association, will give a presentation on the current status and plans for the Great Eastern Trail at the Dougherty House Annex at Mountain Cove Farm in McLemore Cove. Benton MacKaye’s original vision for an Appalachian Trail showed a network of “braided” trails running the length of the Appalachian Mountains, some of which would connect to the main Appalachian Trail. The Great Eastern Trail will be part of that network. For more information on the Great Eastern Trail go to http://www.greateasterntrail.net.
3:30 PM - Monty Robertson will lead a walk around Mountain Cove Farm. With the acquisition of the farm, previously owned by the Yancey family, over 20,000 acres consisting of ridges, slopes and bottomland of scenic McLemore Cove, Pigeon Mountain and Lookout Mountain are permanently protected through DNR and Walker County purchases and various conservation easements. For more information, see http://tinyurl.com/McLemoreCove
7:00 PM - Dougherty House Annex - meeting of persons interested in forming a Georgia Chapter of the Great Eastern Trail Association. There are many current trail projects underway in Georgia which are potentially part of the GET. Most are under-funded and under-staffed. The intention of the Georgia Chapter will be to insure that they are not under-coordinated. A light meal will be served prior to the meeting.
Directions: Take GA 193 west from LaFayette 8 miles to a sharp right curve and wood sign (about 2.4 miles past Davis Crossroads); turn left on West Cove Road. Then continue straight on West Cove Road, which becomes Dougherty Gap Road, for 10.7 miles. The driveway to the Dougherty House Annex, 1010 Dougherty Gap Road, is just before the general store. Sponsored by Bike! Walk! Northwest Georgia (BWNWGA.org) and Walker County government. For more information, contact Bill Moll at WHMoll@aol.com or 706-859-7726. Be advised that cell phone service in the Cove is limited.
