I'm thinking about skipping the poncho and using a large contractor garbage bag. it will double as a beak on my tarp for very bag weather and a poncho while hiking. Anyone know what these large bags weigh?

Not very much. But imagine the holes and tears it'll have after a "close encounter" with a near-trail bramble bush.

Really? How much does a garbage bag weigh? You will have to carry more than one.
I just put one on the digital scale to see what "not very much" actually weighs.
3.90 oz. is the weight of a contractor bag. The bags I have are 3 mil and measure 32" x 50". A note on the carton states, "Double bottom seal for added strength". Keep in mind, like many other items, different brands might be different sizes and thicknesses, therefore different weights.
Also, as the post by Hikes in Rain implies, anything made of plastic sheeting is subject to damage out in the woods.

That contractor bag is WAY oversize, needlessly so. A Hefty trash compactor bag weighs about two ounces.
Love the accuracy and detail in your response thanks!
You're welcome....Too often, when a straightforward technical question is posed, I'm afraid there is a tendency for people (yes, ALL of us mere mortals, myself included) to throw out OPINIONS instead of facts. So, for once, I tried to report facts, rather than blathering about my personal biases.
But, if you want opinions, feel free to ask; we've all got more than our share!

I was trying to decide if carrying 2 trash bags, one for a poncho and one for a beak closure on my tarp tent. Made a poncho that wieghs 5.7oz. Obviously, it makes more sense to use the poncho based on the facts. Thoughts otherwise?
Dry bags should keep things dry and a garbage bag will.
Ponchos should keep you dry and a garbage bag won't. It'll keep the rain off but, you'll wet it out and swim in your own sweat. That's why the rain gear advertisers brag how breathable their product is
Does that need to be reported???
no... that's what the ignore button is for... great feature...

Sorry...I didn't know what size bag would fit Rosborn88...:D Besides, he did ask how much a "large contractor bag" weighs...;)
I currently carry one of the Husky contractor bags in my survival kit but it's on the list of possible drop outs...especially since I now know how much it weighs.

He confused trash bag with trashy hag:)
