Quick questions: Does the camping area for Trail Days have enough trees to accommodate all us hammock hangers? Is there a particular section of the camping area that you experienced Trail Days attendees would recommend?
I asked Wrongway about trees at the camping area. He said that there aren't too many and I should plan on bringing some type of ground shelter instead or in addition.
He was there last year on his thru. Most folks can set up a hammock on the ground but it requires lots of line that would probably be tripped over. I plan on bringing both types of shelter and heading up the trail if the campground is a muddy mess.

I have gone to ground with my hammock in the past and have the ropes this trip to do it again...I'd just rather not for obvious reasons.
BTW heard Peanut got hold of you re: a ride to Damascus. Check you PMs.

She did. I'm still unclear as to whether you still need a ride.
Never mind. I just read the last PM. Glad you got a ride.
The Campground had an area just for hammocking when I was there a couple of years ago. It was in the "quiet area" and had plenty of trees. I don't think you'll have to "go to ground".
Trees abound in the campground!!!!
AND, as mentioned above: there is an area set aside "exclusivly" for hangers.
The first time I was there (in 07) I counted over 80 hammocks in the campground, & those were just the ones I could see.
Yes, there is a HUGE area for tents / ground shelters only, but trees for hangers arn't an issue.
Some notes:
Tents in "their area" = large crowd, near the drum circle, huge party atmosphere.
Hangers (& tenters) in the woods: quieter, less "Party! Party! Party!" going on.
If you want the crowds & a party, you can get that at TrailDays.
If you want to just socalize & hangout, you can get that at TrailDays.

Not for hammocking, but a walk in shelter would be nice once in a while.
And this:

The Nomad tent revived and improved.
Im kind of disappointed after hearing about Trail Days and reading about it in AT books. I dont really want to waste time at a party.
Though I would like to see the new gear...
Some people do have a huge party, but most folks go to see their trail friends, view the new gear, enjoy the entertainment, see a "famous" hiker or two, listen to speakers, and just hang out. I don't know anyone who actually has been that thought it was a "waste of time".

For those hammockers who have never been to Trail Days but are thinking of going in the future:
Circumstances got me to Damascus on Tuesday where I spent two nights at The Place. While there I took a stroll out to the campground and scoped out the hammocking possibilities. I found 5 within 50 yards of and just south of the dumpster/parking area. I moved out to the campground Thurs. morning. Others have referenced a "hammocking area" but I never saw it. There were hammockers scattered all through the wooded area. Had I known about the "beer baseball" game that went well into Friday (or was it Thursday) night I probably would have gone deeper into the woods where there were numerous spots.
Oh well, live and learn.
