I finished this section yesterday southbound and I had a pretty good time. Other than a racoon stealing one of my crocs it was another walk in the woods. (BTW, 1 croc is a pretty useless item...)

SNP was not what I expected - it wasn't particularly challenging but it wasn't a cakewalk either. From what I've read about that section I guess I was expecting escalators at the bottom of each hill. I did enjoy a cheeseburger at Elkwallow Wayside but I didn't stop at Skyland or Loft Mountain Waysides.

The roller coaster section wasn't that bad and the Bear's Den hostel rocks!

Water everywhere except the 13.1 miles betweek Black Rock and Calf Mountain huts... I also saw a Kelty sleeping bag about 10' up in a tree, several random food caches and a fair amount of litter.

I have now completed the southern half of the trail - Springer Mountain to Harper's Ferry - in 17 months!

Sounds like you had a good time. I'll be starting a little north of Rockfish and heading to Bear's Den. I went from HF's to Bear's Den last year and loved BD. I'm definetly looking forward to hitting SNP this year.

Redwing & Hopeful were great hosts when I was there! We couldnt have asked for nicer ppl. I had injured my foot and was deciding about going on or not and Redwing sat with me for awhile and had a nice little heart-to-heart with me. Great folks!

Be heading to the trail in July for a couple of weeks going NOBO and hope to make PA if my legs will hold up.

Good to hear about the water situation.

SNP is probably better known for its great mountain top views than its challenges of the AT. SNP's challenges are more on it's trails off the AT. The AT does become more challenging as you head south from SNP on the AT.
