Trail is in good shape and you choose the easier side of the state. We have had a good deal of rain so expect it to be a bit muddy and as it warms up there will be a good number of gnats coming out. Watch out for the Flamingos! lol.

just came through new york sobo . there are no bear boxes til wildcat shelter. going south i did not bother hanging my food bags but halfway through the state i ran into a day hiker who mentioned a bear in the neighborhood of wiley shelter . i'm told the bear has been spotted numerous times in the past by the locals.
new york is alot of up's and downs . after bear mountain you'll have some nice easy trail for a bit . hosner mountain is pretty tough even tho it isn't a high elevation it is tough rocky walking. hope you have good weather.the shelters are all in good shape and be sure to check out anthony's nose right after you cross the hudson and get back on trail go up hill just a few tenth's of a mile you'll come to another trail , take a right and it's not very far from there , come to the end and climb up the huge rock on your left . the viewis pretty nice . go down the rock on the south side just a little then turn right , go to edge and there is a better view that you cannot see from the very top of the rock. it's a view of the bridge you just came acrossed and bear mountain. 1 more thing , the museum and zoo before the bridge are awsome.

Thank you for the advice, particularly re: bears and hanging. Definitely going to hang all food, etc if no bear boxes around and not just rely on the old mouse ropes.

Climb up wasn't that bad, got off metro north at manitou, climbed up to tenting area on top of anthony's nose for evening, walked to crampton lake state park for sat night, spend sunday night at telephone pioneers shelter, back to city monday morning.
little bit muddy, the mosquitos and ticks are starting to get a bit intense (had to pull a few off daily), but water was running good and the trail was easy sailing
I think the area around nuclear lake would've been more fun to explore if it hadn't been hailing, but some fun vistas nonetheless.
