I have been eyeballing the Steripens for a while now and i think I am going to break down and buy 1. My question is what is the difference between the Adventurer and the Journey? I know the Journey has a LCD, but other than that, is one better than the other and why?

The Adventurer has the water sensors on the side just above the bulb which makes it tough to use bottles with a narrow mouth so I ended up carrying a nalgene bottle. I noticed that the Journey seems to have the sensors at the same level as the bulb, if that is true then you might be able to use it with a wider range of bottles. If you could use it with a gatorade bottle then the weight savings of carrying a gatorade versus a nalgene are greater than the extra 1 oz for the Journey.

I have the older standard model so I can't speak to the differences of these, but I will say I love my Steripen. I've been using mine for going on three years now and am totally jazzed about its performance and reliability. I get about a month's use out of 4-AA Lithium batteries. With the batteries, it weighs less than a conventional pump filter. It allows me to carry less water than filter users, who tend to go through the filtering ritual as few times as possible a day, thus treating and carrying more water. I can do the two-button-push and get a half liter of water treated in seconds. Can't ask for more.

I bought a new Adventurer and like it much better than any pumps or chemicals.
The pen is lightwight and works perfectly every time. I carry soda or water bottles which are too narrow for the pen, but carry a blue wally world sports bottle too that is lighter than a Nalgene, has a wide mouth that fits the pen, and is not made from BPA.

FYI, I had a problem with my older standard model during my last hike. Every time I tried to use it I would get a red flashing LED and then it would quit completely. I couldn't figure out why, I had just put fresh LI batteries in it. I opened it up and found the problem, I had one battery in backwards. I would have thought that it wouldn't work at all but I guess it had enough power to just start, the quit. Chalk it up to operator error!

I get an occasional 'fail to start' which is related to the electrodes being wet. I think they have corrected this on later models. When it happens I just carefully dry the two electrodes off and then it works like a charm.
