View Full Version : Latest and Greatest New Gear - opinions wanted
So what's caught your eye lately?
Some new stuff at Trail Days I found interesting are the floorless shelters by AT (Appy Trails) http://www.appytrails.com/
and the reintroduced "Nomad" tent http://lightheartgear.com/faq.html
improved and made and marketed by a completely different company.

If I were to change from a tarp w/ bug tent, I would try this tent based on the Nomad design. I believe the Nomad was a single wall and had condensation problems but the retro design with double walls just might work....
All the other tarp types are just inferior Jardine knock offs....
LED's continue to improve this year.
The Caldera Cone (homemade ) is a very nice substitute for a wind screen and pot stand. I still like the original Leki's with a REAL positive angle, not the angle integrated into the grip.

The neatest piece of gear I got recently and use with anticipation every winter trip is a nice merino midweight balaclava by Icebreaker. See below fotog. I used to use a thinner Patagonia 'clava and find the IB to be twice as thick and twice as warm.
Sealing wax. My father perfected it last week.

I' d be interested to see the new tents that are out there. After nearly 500 trail nights, we think our Mtn Hdwr Waypt II has finally bit the dust. It leaks around the one seam in the floor (patchable, but questionable at best), and the adhesive holding the bug mesh has come undone at 2 different locations. I'll probably still use it for solo trips, but where looking to get a 3+ man for the whole family. what should we get?

Squeeze Bacon. I haven't tried it but sure sounds like a winner.

On that same subject I got the Amigo Pro Gravity Filter and tried it out last weekend. A little slow at first but after awhile it kicks in pretty good. Excellent product.

How heavy are most gravity filters? I don't have any experience with any of them, but they seem like a good idea, makes things easy around camp, but I'm not sure I'd want to carry one.

Ditto on that I have been eyeballing Steripens for months now, I bid one all the way to 59 with 10 dollars shipping, as soon as I can get a new one for less than 70 I will buy it lol

the best backpacking thing i've seen in the past year is spam singles
Marmot's Mica Rain Jacket(mens version, womens version is called Crystalline), Henry Shires Sublite single walled tarptent, Gossamer Gear's single walled tent The One, Thermarest NeoAir Shorty, MontBell's Spiral down sleeping bags, and Montrail's 09 Mid Hardrock GTX are my top gear additions/picks for this year.

I decided to try that last summer, and I don't know why I keep trying spam over and over again. I just can't it eat. Tastes like puke.

I think that you are on to something useful here...
Apparently we spend about 10% of our energy digesting food, so if we ingest pre-digested food that figure should be reduced greatly.
Food for thought anyway.

Did you ever notice if its new - its hard to find on the Outfitters website because the New Ballence shoes block the search?
Ok here you go ... Something new.... Really new.

http://www.rei.com/product/780427Neat indeed, but solar powered stuff on the AT is useless, unless you have hours to spend charging it in a sunny spot. If I were hiking out west it just might make my buy list.
if you stopped for a half hour for lunch at a shelter, or someplace similar, i bet you could charge that baby up most days. it's not like you'd use the battery till depletion every night.
