if a feud breaks out im on the doyals side. but im sellin captured hikerslaves to both sides. and im gonna be the big man in town. if trailangelmary or the doyal want anything from the outside world, i have to approve it. and ill require two saloon girls full time . one a blond and the other a brunett. and ill have the wall removed between room 24 and mine and call it my suites.

Discussing these kinds of disagreements publicly on an internet forum rarely improves the situation.

I love the Doyle (and Pat and Vicky). I love Mary. I understand the disagreements, and its unfortunate.

I do want to add something. I started the Winter Warmer at the Doyle because I really love that place. Originally, there were only a few of us that got together there. And while I'm happy for whatever money the Warmer brings into town, I'm also aware that in many ways the Warmer is a lot of work for Pat and Vicky. And it also chases out a lot of the local clients.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that I feel in Pat and Vicky's DEBT for allowing us to have the Warmer at their place of business, and for putting up with us. Earlier comments by Hoop Time made it seem like the businesses in the town should be thanking these kind of events. I feel like we should be thanking them.

If that was the impression I left, then I should clarify . . . I think, like most relationships that work, this one thrives because both sides give and both benefit.

And last thing I would want anyone to think is that I am in any way, shape, or form anti-Doyle. It is easily my favorite place to drink or dine in the Midstate. I just wish I was not on a diet so I could do more than drool as my wife and Cookie Monster down their burgers and fries (taking nothing away from Pat's chef salads, which barely qualify as "diet" food, but are lower in cholesterol than a half-pound of ground beef).

I am a big fan of Pat and Vicky, a big fan of Mary, and as a trail enthusiast who lives in the area, would like nothing more than to see the relationship between Duncannon and AT hikers thrive.

My whole point is that this is a win-win situation for all involved and it should remain just that.

Thanks for clarifying, Hoop Time. I guess this is the statement that I disagree with. We don't know the whole story. I grew up in the restaurant business so I have a different perspective on this I guess.

I've worked quite a few festivals and special events for the family business, and I can tell you there were many times when we would be swamped, but at the end of the day I'd think that it just wasn't worth it. Sometimes it is - don't get me wrong. But these kinds of things disrupt your normal business and often bring in a whole set of new problems to deal with.

I don't want to ramble on about all the details of this (I can if anybody wants). My only point is that just because there is an event that brings more people into town, that doesn't NECESSARILY mean that the businesses are better off because of it. Its easy to assume that more people = more business = more profit. But the formula is just not that easy, and if things don't go well, there are repercussions that end up costing the business money for months after.

What a silly argument.

The Doyle is not "all about the money" and anyone who'd actually been there more than once (or perhaps twice) in the last seven years would know this.

Lotta foolish trash talk and borderline troll comments here on WB lately, including some from folks who don't get out much.

Too bad.

makeing love in 23. marys house after a long ride or hike being open to me. vickys hugs. pats confiding in me the inner workings of the town and inviteing me into his secret room to play pool with close friends and meeting his bro. mary allowing me to pick and choose fun jobs at the feed. fred haveing my cell number and me his at bourough hall. being invited to join the legion outpost for drinks . mr miller finnaly remembering me when i come in the drug store. taters kindness. jimmys sarcasum. curty being my friend when others dont know him and his simple existance as a resident of the doyal for decades. the sun on the river in the winter morning as i put on rainpants and tee shirt and hike out of the doyal for a short recon. the special places in the woods me and tricks know. the ballfeild filled with people i love. the falcon hunting pigeons from the fire escape. and yes, i even have love for the flattened bacon at goodies that really could be bacon if it wasnt whatever it is. and most of all about victoria, she is the kind of woman i want. i model all women against her. so i regaurd her as near perfect. and so does pat. who never shuts up about his loveing her to death. cause he does. and so do i. and mary. and we all love jack. and jester. and chomp and the dude and walkin home and all the doyalites. we are family!

im buyin the doyal for a dollar. its been in the works for a while. me and pat and vic talk about it once in a while but the idea is set.
when i restore the doyal to historical perfection as a gift to the family, with moneys from my art when it sells, i will need so many contractors and steps to do the work in a short time that being the owner for a breif period is to save time and trouble. then i will sell it back to them for the same dollar. and that dollar will hang in the pool room in an unasumming frame. well ,..those are the details so far. the restored doyal will be in no way different than it is but for the lack of father times drool witch presently covers parts.

Matthewski is certainly not Mary's only fan. Was passing the Scott Farm today on my way back from a house fire out past there and saw two hikers crossing Benheisel Bridge looking hot and tired. So I drove on out to the Hess store on Route 11, picked up a couple frozen Pepsis and doubled back to greet them. They proceeded to tell me how bummed they were they were not fast enough to get to Duncannon for the Billville feed because they had eaten Mary's incredible cooking at Trail Days.

maybe not ALL about the money, but 99.5%* is about the money, it is a business after all. hopefully at least 0.5%* is fun.

*their percentage may vary. jack, it might be interesting to ask them though, rather than debate it here

TM, nobody ever denied or questioned whether or not the Doyle is a business. Of course it is. But I don't think Pat and Vicki went into this thing with the intention of getting rich off the place. Their kindness and consideration to hikers began the day they took over. So don't get me wrong; I'm not questioning that running a hotel and restaurant is their livelihood. What I'm questioning is folks who baldly state that these folks are "all about the money". When the people saying such things neither know P&V very well, nor have visitied the Doyle more than once or twice in recent years....well, I have to question the worth of their comments.

I am still trying to figure out what is wrong with it being about the money. They have found a solid niche market and they do an extremely fine job marketing to it. They deliver a good product. They take genuine interest in their customers and give them outstanding service. Pat and Vicky run a business the way businesses should be run. They have a genuine commitment to providing good value. Caring about your customers and taking good care of them and making a profit don't have to be mutually exclusive concepts. If all businesses in this country were ran as they run the Doyle, the economy would not be in the crapper.
