Process byproducts from acid etch are recyclable Reduction of energy used in the acid etch process JAK 05-27-2009, 10:14 90% of stuff called green or eco or organic or low sodium or whatever really isn't. If you want real eco-friendly aluminum anodizing, just leave it as is, or use a stick instead. :) Engine 05-27-2009, 10:48 What environmentally damaging process occurs during anodizing aluminum? Just curious. wcgornto 05-27-2009, 10:59 Here´s what Big Agnes´website says about it, FWIW. DAC NSL Tent Poles DAC poles featuring DAC's new Green Anodizing™ process and we incorporate these poles and Green Anodized J Stakes in our tent line. Tent poles are shiny and smooth because of the chemical polishing stage in the anodizing process, which requires two very toxic chemicals, phosphoric and nitric acid. DAC has perfected a better process that is safer for our environment and its employees by eliminating the need for the polishing stage and these two hazardous chemicals. Additionally, they significantly reduce waste water by recycling water throughout the rinsing process. JAK 05-27-2009, 11:05 Why anodize at all? Just extrude 'em and be done with it. Green Anodizing = Marketing Nonsense. rhjanes 05-27-2009, 11:09 how about, a coat of boiled linseed oil? That's what the old timers did! Cheap, eco-friendly, can reapply at will, etc....downside is the dry time and the "tacky" feeling. JAK 05-27-2009, 11:15 We are talking about aluminum right? It protects itself with a thin coating of aluminum oxide. When you scratch it, the aluminum beneath oxidizes instantly. Self healing. Aluminum doesn't corrode. OK, maybe in salt water, especially when in contact with some other metal like stainless steel, but you don't need to annodize aluminum poles unless you want to make them look pretty. JAK 05-27-2009, 11:21 Most aluminum spars on sailboats are not annodized. Some are, mostly to look pretty. Where stainless steel fittings go throught the aluminum, the aluminum will corrode especially in a salt water or salt spray environment, but annodizing won't prevent this. It still takes a while though. You could use monel fittings instead of stainless, or you might try an epoxy barrier between the two metals, or just replace the cheap aluminum tubing every couple of years. It doesn't need to be annodized, for most applications, except to sell for more money. If they can't call it Green, they might be able to save some money and charge more at the same time. That's all this is. JAK 05-27-2009, 11:22 I meant to say if they call it Green they might be able to save some money and charge more at the same time. That's all this is. charlie2008 05-27-2009, 23:34 Carving and recycling a stick....gotta be better.......i tink? :banana |
