i plan on starting in feb-march 2011. figured id take a year to prep, conditon, not much needed, and save some extra money. i was going to start in 2010 but i get out of the marines a bit late and dont want to rush the prep. get out in march 010. i will be alone, interested in linking up with someone else. let me know. the only sectioned i have hiked is nc and ct. have hiked mount washington and othe areas in new hampshire vermont, newyork, cali, and maine.

Bluffhead,
My son and I will be heading out as soon as my last Feb '11 baby is born. We'll have to head out fairly early in the hiking year as I need to get him back for swim season.
As a freshman, he made districts w/ a bad knee. His knee is better and he's faster than ever. If he keeps this up, he'll be in line for a swimming scholarship.
I'll be 52. Wills will be 16.
How long have you been in the Marines? Wilser is in MCJROTC. He wants to be a Navy Seal. ("Mom, they swim and blow stuff up!")

:-? Thinking ----> me that is. Had a thought of wanting to be a U.S. snail mail trail angle. You know, send out some supplies or something like that. If there is such a thing. If there is I would love to help a thru hiker out a little. Just don't know if there is such a thing.
Does anyone know if there is something like that or can you help a hiker out ? :-?

There will be plenty of other NOBOs out there starting the same time. . . you won't be at a loss for company. . . .

Bluffhead,
Warraghiyagey's right. (Did I spell that right?) There will be plenty of NOBO's starting out. We'll all have lots of company. You may or may not pair up with someone who is a good match for you, you may hike the whole way with a series a different folks. People tend to hike their own hike unless they're a little weird. :-?
We do alot of hiking around where we live. We belong to the local trail association and hike with them or on our own frequently.
Wilser is very fit and physically active. Besides being an amazing swimmer and steadfast hiker, he works out frequently. Because he likes it. He does push-ups with a 25-lb weight on his back. I was teasing him tonight about his man-boobs. He's got pecs like child his age shouldn't even dream of.
He's also a very determined long-range planner. At least for the last couple of years.
Fritz,
I'm not the fastest hiker out and will probably take awhile to do the trail. So we may run into each other. Depending on your speed, maybe we'll finish together.
See you under the trees!

Don't try to set up a hiking partner. It should happen naturally with the people you meet on the trail.

My plan is to start April 1 and finish before Baxter State Park closes on the 15th of October. I'm really going to enjoy this so I'm not going to set a daily pace (and fail to keep it). I figure I'll go at the pace my feet take me and enjoy the scenery!
See you out there!
i am thinking of leaving around march 1. i need to finish the trail in time to begin college in the fall so... when i decide leave all depends on when i need to finish. hope to see some of you guys out there.

Had you considered a flip flop? I'm starting SOBO late May 2011 in Pawling NY, jumping from Roanoke to Katahdin, then finishing on the south end mid November. Autumn in the Smokies; very colorful.
...and I'm looking for a partner.
