View Full Version : What's in MD
So, this weekend my spouse is going on her first-ever overnight backpacking trip. We're going to do the 40 mile MD section starting at Pen Mar Park and going SOBO to Harper's Ferry.
Is there anything on the "Must see" list? How about an ice cream store "just off the trail". Failing that, how about a cold Pepsi?... ;)

Pen Mar has a vending machine... aside from that, sobo is a heck of a hill to climb once you come down the nasty hill out of devils race course

Yeah, from what I understand we're getting the hardest part of the hike out of the way first.
It would be nice if, somewhere along the trail in MD, there was a road crossing with a store nearby. Not necessary, but nice.
(Which reminds me, I'd like to PM you for some ideas for my PA hike next month if that'd be ok...)

Hey - thanks for that.
North of the I-70 footbridge, the A.T. crosses U.S. 40, where it is west 0.4 mile to the Dogpatch Tavern, across the road from Greenbrier State Park.
Refreshments and good food.
Hey Lonewolf, the place is up for sale.

At US Alt Rte 40 (Turners Gap) there is the Old South Mountain Inn. The trail goes right by it.
Hikers staying at Dahlgren Campground can literally shower and shave before an elegant dining experience, then walk back to camp in minutes. (Take your pack with you.)

All of the above, plus. Overnight at Maple Tree Campground (treehouse camping, with outdoor showers) Camp Ground is just downhill from Crampton Gap. Garvey shelter is great but water is a long ways downhill! Lots to see and do in Harper's Ferry (if you get the chance go on the Ghost Tour, lots of fun). Plenty of eating places in town plus ICE CREAM!!! Lots to see and do along the route. Food at South Mt. Inn is great and they like hiker's or they did in 1980 when I thru hiked.
Have Fun,
Rick

Doing nobo section from harpers ferry up to mid pa. hope to see yall out on the trail
I'm planning this hike in Sept are you guys using a shuttle for the ride back to Pen Mar? or doing the multiple car thing? thanks
I hope you do not try to push her to hard for a first time hike. 2 20 mile days in a row may be a little much for a first timer. you want her to have fun and come back and hike with you again. what about 3 or 4 days? have a great hike

Oh yeah, I forgot that shenandoah st. in harpers ferry is amazing at 2am when the place is a ghost town. An amazing contrast. Got in late and had to hike the section so I spent about an hour walking around town just enjoying the solitude. I forgot about old south mt. inn. I blew by it after grabbing a shower at dahlgren campground. Heard it was expensive but good food.

You mean the climb up Quirauk Mountain out of PenMar?
I'm planning a SOBO hike from Calendonia to Ashby Gap around June 22nd. I've done the section before, I just feel like getting out, and it's close to home for me.
Quirauk Mountain that's a great rocky climb takes my breath away everytime I do it.

Second best bar on the AT. 2002 opened at 11 am and sold 2 LARGE sloppy joes and a good size order of fries for $3 as their hiker special. Mondays draft beer was 1/2 price .50 a glass ( I was there tuesday). Let hikers stay in the back yard overnight. Big sign in the bar: "on this mountain we take care of our biker trash and hiker trash".
What's the price?

Update from the wife. We will be placing a car at Harpers Ferrry, getting shuttled to Pen Mar, and beginning the hike on Tuesday June 30th. We are planning to end in Harpers Ferry on Sunday July 5th. This will give us enough time to enjoy ourselves and this section of trail. Looking forward to meeting some of you guys out there.

hiked it with my kids and finished this morning. I went NOBO and we took our time (5 days, 4 nights).
We started out with ice cream in Harpers Ferry and climbed to Weaverton cliff. My son (age 9) was real fascinated with the view of the Potomac from there. We spent the night at Garvey Shelter and the kids loved sleeping in the loft. Lots of thru-hikers there and we hit it off with Miss Muster and Ketchup. Day 2 we got a pick me up delivery of sodas from my father at the first state park we hiked thru and made it to the Dahlgren backpacker campground in time for a hail storm and to shower our bodies. A meal at the restaurant was nice. Day three took us to Pogo Memorial Campgsites after the fun of Annapolis Rocks. After camping in the rain we slogged thru the mud in day 4 where we made it all the way to the last road crossing before the climb up Quirauk Mt. I was coming down with strep throat so I called my father to pick us up there and I spent the night in my truck sucking on throat lozenges while the kids stayed in my father's tent (at Greenbrier Campground). We slackpacked the last 5.9 miles today and I got home with a 101 degree fever. Still had a blast and loved Maryland. Easy trail for the most part, but enough climbs to get the heart rate uppp

P.S. Thru hikers were wonderful to my kids. They made a big deal over their 8 mile days and called them by their trail names and treated them like one of the gang. It really was special for them.

I met them at Partnership Shelter in April. If I hadn't pushed my planned SOBO hike up two weeks, I might have seen them again!
Nice ladies. The women way outnumbered the men during the afternoon I spent enjoying trail magic at Partnership.

Funny you should mention it.... My wife and I just got back yesterday from hiking Pen Mar - Harper's Ferry and we both noticed that female hikers were as, or more, numerous than male hikers.
