Shuttle needed from the LT crossing parking lot on US Route 4 to the LT Northern Terminus near North Troy, VT. I have been quoted $250. That's a bit too much for me since I'm presently existing on Social Security. Shucks, I can fly to most East Coast cities for less:-? Time frame: Any time in the next three weeks.

Care to drive me there for $200? :D

It sounds like a lot, but $250 is about right, I would think. Don't most charge $1.00 to $1.25 a mile for what they have to drive?

It's 125 miles from the Inn to the northern trailhead, and about 3 hours.

The shuttler has to drive 250 miles, only a buck a mile, let alone the six hours he will spend doing it.

Well lets see::-? My old SAAB gets 31 MPG highway. That's about 8 gallons of gas @2.50 = $20.00 Subtract that from $250 leaves close to $38.00 an hour for driving six hours. I realize that "legal" insurance for shuttling people is high, but $38.00 an hour to drive your own car? Nice work if you can get it:rolleyes:. And of course people are getting it, but not from me thank you. Asbestos suit is now on:p

No absestos suit needed, just some numbers to chew on. The IRS calculates the cost of car ownership with personal insurance (not "legal" taxi-type insurance) at $0.55 per mile. Wear and tear is a big deal as well as insurance. Shuttlers aren't getting rich and I don't blame you to be looking for a better deal, I would too.

The IRS mileage rate for deduction from your income tax liability is only fourteen cents a mile. As AT Corridor Monitor Coordinator for the AT running from Woodstock, VT to North Woodstock, NH (165 miles of corridor boundary) I log about 2000 miles of driving a year. If the Frederal Guvmint wants to encourage us'n to volinteer, why don't they let us deduct the same as business expense mileage? After all, it's all out of our pockets.

agreed... according to this estimate gas is .10/mile for a 30/mpg car, which are few and far between still. that leaves .04/mile for depreciation, insurance, etc. doesn't work too well. thanks for volunteering AND contributing.

Hillwalker, if you still need a ride I live in this area and would be more than happy to help you out. Please PM me and we'll work out what you feel is a reasonable price for this service, how's that?

Hillwalker, here's another suggestion. If you are up for it, you can take local buses north well past Mt Pelier. I don't recall all the names of the bus lines(2 bus companies), but it makes for an interesting journey anyhow; you'll experience more of what Vermont has to offer. From where the northern most local bus drops you off, about 40-45 miles or so from Trails End, you can hitch the rest of the way to Trails End. I did it. Started hitching just above Mt. Pelier at 10 A.M. and by 3 p.m I was at Trails End. The Long Trail is well known by native Vermonters and are quick to help with rides and such. Or, you might be able to cut the shuttle cost by arranging to be picked up further north.

Sorry about not having that bus line info, but I'm going to post it at some point because the question on how to get to the LT northern terminus arises often on WB.
