If you have the Companion or the Handbook, is the databook neccessary? From the sample pages I've seen of both, it looks like they now fully incorporate all of the mileages into both.
Also does anyone know when the 09 thru-hiker handbooks are going to be available? The website isn't very informative, and amazon says it doesn't have any in stock.

I don't use the Data Book since I use the companion
The '09 books are on the shelves.
The '10 books probably come out in January.

Been looking online, but can't seem to find the '09 handbook anywhere. Am starting from DWG to Springer this fall.

Use the Companion for planning, take pages from the Databook while hiking.

I use Appalachian Pages. It incorporates both into one book and is much better in my opinion. YMMV

The databook for planning a hike is pretty much worthless. I have a 2003 edition and whenever I complete a section hike I highlight where I started each day. Once I complete the entire trail I'll have a record of how much I did each day.
