For anyone who is planning on parking at the Art Loeb trailhead at Camp Daniel Boone, it might be a good idea for you to call the BSA office in Asheville before driving up there. The entire camp has been temporarily closed due to a possible swine flu outbreak. They had several campers test positive during their busiest season of the year (5000+ every summer) and are now disinfecting everything there.

You're not going to catch it from the trees and shrubbery, but it may be a good idea to check and see if they have closed the gates or anything like that.

Not exactly sure, but I don't believe that swine flu technically originated from swine... I believe they renamed it H1N1 Virus for this reason...
Not fair to the piggys!:D

Check your sources. H1N1 originated from swine.

I was under the belief that they quit calling it swine flu so nitwits would quit killing their pigs.
Great pic though.
No, but some israelis wanted to call it Mexican Flu because pigs aren't kosher.
I'm not kidding (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8021301.stm).

US Pork lost millions of dollars because of TV and print reports repeatedly calling it swine flu even after H1N1 became the most accurate and scientific description. They reported million dollar + losses that've trickled all the way down to local hog farmers. All this because ignorant segments of the public heard "swine flu" and thought the chops down at the market were risky.

I did a dayhike up to Cold Mtn on June 29th, tons of kids running all around the camp. Sure was a lot different than last year when I backpacked the ALT in May and those empty buildings seemed like a ghost town.
Anyway, it's not closed anymore.

My son and I hiked up there lst weekend as well. I ran into one of the camp instructors and asked him about the camp closing. He said they never closed and so far all sessions have run a expected. They did have a couple of kids who were suspiciiously ill and were quarrentined but no one else got sick.

Actually I think I'll go there to get it out of the way. It's supposed to come back more virulent and deadly in the fall.

The H1N1 is actually 2 strains of swine flu, 1 strain of avian flu and 1 human strain. Still waiting for an explanation as to how that can naturally occur

The process is called antigenic shift.
Here is a link that explains it better than I can:

If the area is closed and not accessable, then that makes the decision.
If it is open, have no fear, swine flu is no big deal right now. It is not any worse than normal seasonal flu.

But then again, I can not even spell "accessible" right.

It's the same situation as in many of the summer camps.....groups of kids from all over, mixing germs from all points of the compass. Not only did Camp Danial Boone have reported cases, but Camp Ton-a-wandah, Camp Judaea, etc., all in western NC. The only reason that I mentioned Camp Daniel Boone specifically was that it could have possibly involved access the the Art Loeb trailhead....if the powers that be had excercised their usual knee-jerk reaction to media coverage of a possible outbreak.
