Hey guys,

I'm about to hit the trail for a few days. We'll be going from Dicks Creek to Neels Gap. I was curious if anyone knew of any waterfalls or watering holes along the route? I know there are streams and what not, as shown on the maps, but I was looking for anything more substantial. I went from Neels to Amicalola a while back and came across a few nice waterfalls. I'd like to experience the same on this upcoming trip. Thanks!!

About 4 weeks ago when I went through that area (Springer to Deep Gap, NC) I didn't see any substantial waterfalls (other than the monsoons we hiked through). There are a couple of trickles you'll see, especially as you come out of Unicoi Gap, but nothing that really stands out in my memory. It's a beautiful section you're going to do, have a great time!

There are some waterfalls in the general area, but not accessible from the AT or any of the side trails. The ones that a lot of tourists like to take in include:

DeSoto Falls - S of Neels Gap
Raven Falls - S of Hogpen Gap
Ruby Falls (Unicoi State Park) east of Helen
Panther Creek Falls (S of Clayton, E of Dicks Creek)

There are a few smaller, less known falls in the area as well. There is a book entitled Waterfalls in Georgia. It breaks the state into regions and lists all the prominent water falls in each region. that book could give you more information. All the falls that I am aware of in that general area will need to be accessed by car, not foot, when you are hiking the AT. I am pretty familiar with the area. I was a GATC maintainer for 6 years and know most of the side trails off the AT in GA.
