So I'm reading the headlines on Yahoo and I come across this http://www.tricities.com/tri/news/local/article/bear_sightings_have_damascus_residents_wary/25476/ Why do folks in an applachian town need "bear training"?
"...After a rash of bear complaints, town and wildlife officials have scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m. Friday at Town Hall to educate the public on avoiding bear problems..."

Lonewolf isn't afraid of no bears....bears fear him. Why else do bears always frequent shelters instead of campsites.
The reason for the sightings is that its summer time, and bears are active. Nothing new. The Nobo crowd is long gone so bears don't have free lunch anymore.
The only bear sightings I ever heard about in the area was at Thomas Knob and Mountain Shelters. Then a few sighting up through Shady Valley to the TN 91 crossing.

It's pretty simple: Don't leave food or garbage lying around where bears can get at it. If there's no food, there won't be any bears. And if the bear on your property persists in creating problems or becomes a threat to you or your family, then you shoot it.
Pretty elementary. I'm pretty sure the good and sensible citizens of Damascus can figure thus out on their own.......without training.

If I had a rash of bear I'd complain too.
I usually complain about any type of rash....never had a bear rash but I'm sure it will need some tending to.

Bears are getting to be a real problem in some towns, and unfortunately a lot of people have developed habits that provide a lot of food sources for bears that decide to take the easy route - leaving out pet food and trash for two examples. People who don't hike often don't even think about this sort of thing.
Even in appalachia, society's encroachment upon animal habitat is causing a lot more 'freeloading' animals. Most folks around here have a really hard time raising a garden because of the deer. It's not uncommon for them to even eat the ornamentals planted right next to a house. I saw one eating flowers off a porch the other day!
Officer Kermit was telling me the other day that he spotted a 400 pounder sitting in someones driveway with a bag of garbage in its mouth about two weeks ago at two in the morning........then my neighbors across the street told me a very big bear sauntered thru their yard and across the highway and went between my house and my other property about a week ago as well........
But what am I gonna do about it? Let them roam.......

Or.....GET LOCKING TRASHCANS and practice simple problem bear removal techniques. No one has a starter pistol? Scare them bears out of town. They don't like very loud barking dogs either....Come on folks.....google a national geographic program about bears and do something about it. If they are not harming anyone or causing too many problems...let them be. Taking away the food source means they have no interest.
