RAPID CITY -- On Monday a Rapid City woman took the first steps of a journey that will add another five million.
Sharon Nelson, Rapid City and her cousin Rose Volden climbed Mount Katahdin, Maine's “greatest mountain” to begin their Appalachian Trail odyssey.
“This is our dream and (our families) are glad we're doing it,” Nelson said. “They think that we are a little crazy and that's why they're not going with us.”
Their “crazy” adventure will take them through 14 states from Maine to Springer Mountain, Georgia. The journey will take them 2,176 miles in approximately four months. The amount of elevation gained and lost totals up to approximately 88 miles, or 16 Mount Everest's on top of each other.
“It's daunting, but I think it is like a lot of other things - you have to do one day at a time because if you look at the whole thing it is overwhelming,” she said.
