I guess when you gotta blow off some steam ya just go hike.
It sure beats finding him drunk on the roads or other stupid crap some of our elected officials do.
I would have told someone though.

I love it. Take another road to another place, disappear without a trace. He probably did tell someone, but they are most likely a good enough friend to leave him the hell alone for a few days.

Yep, he could've done worse! Better than pulling a Spitzer and getting the aka name of "Client-9!"
Didn't someone tell him that it's a government trail (http://www.nps.gov/appa) ?

Hey, I'm glad he's hiking and hope that he has a good time. IMHO, I think that it is a good thing for a few of our political leaders to have some first hand contact with the AT or other National Scenic Trails. I hope that it helps him to recharge a bit . . . that is one of the reasons that I hike, and I suspect the same is true for many of you. I do find it a bit sad and hypocritical that many folks are slamming him for this. I wonder how some of these same critics would have reacted if a high profile politician from the left were hiking.

Left or right who cares. If he was hiking he just got the A.T. a ton of free publicity.
Look forward to his trip report. Maybe he ran into some disgruntled hiker ------ what was his name......??????? No don't say i! Does he now qualify to attend trail days?

I would like to know where he had hiked. Possibly later on it will leak out..... What better place to clear your mind than a hike on the AT. Also helps keep the pesky media off your back...tv cameras are not that light.

A little odd he left his 4 boys home on Fathers Day, and apparently didn't tell them or his wife where he was going, or even that he was going. Strange family values.

I agree.... Speaking for myself, I know that getting out there and hiking does alot to restore me as a person. I think if more of our leaders took the time get out there and hike we might see some better policy when they got back home....
Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee (R) used to backpack on the AT pretty regularly when he was Mayor of Chattanooga. Miss Janet shuttled him once or twice.

Several years ago I saw Zell Miller, former Georgia governor and senator on the AT between Unicoi Gap and Blue Mountain. He was with another guy, and they just looked like any other hiker out for the day. Of course, he's a real old mountain boy from Young Harris.
Wasn't Sunday hike naked day? Hmmm, I wonder.

And how many Fathers go play golf on Father's Day?
Love to know how many Mom and Dad hikers who are out there who are not home on Father's Day and Mother's Day....

Was he anywhere near the Doyle?
I think it's a pretty good story. I am curious to see when, and if, he can detail his trip. How could he plan a four-day hike w/o his wife knowing?
From waht I understand former Clinton Admin. Sec. of the Interior Bruce Babbit is an avid hiker. I once saw a pix of him in some AT book attempting the the 1/2 gallon challange.
Perhaps he didn't tell his family due to the fact that he may have thought they would try to badger him into not going.

06-23-2009, 22:00
The commentators are making much of the fact that it was Hike Naked Day, saying things like, "Who would possibly hike naked," or worse, "who would possibly hike alone?" Not even hikers hike alone!" And, "Five days - that's not a hike, it's a death march!"
Meanwhile, did any WB member happen to see him? Any confirmation at all?
A little odd he left his 4 boys home on Fathers Day, and apparently didn't tell them or his wife where he was going, or even that he was going. Strange family values.
I'm not taking political sides at all and certainly not defending him, but maybe that was his sons' Father's day present for him, just get away to be by yourself. I go hiking on our anniversary and my wife doesn't mind, she enjoys the alone time.
And I think his wife knew, she was just covering for him. That's what you do when you care enough for someone, I don't mean lie for them but not tell the whole truth. She may have known he was hiking but not exactly where. He could have been anywhere on the AT. And as far as not doing his duty to his constituents, hey everyone deserves a vacation esp. without the press hounding you all day.

... No politics on the trail, just a brother walking. As posted above its a great way to clear one's thinking....my job is loaded with stress and my multiple trips are perfect for putting things back into prospective. And yes people who needed to know (including his wife) knew where he was and were protecting his privacy. (I guess it's OK to post without doing any research...it's what most the media does these days) Golly gee, cant take a walk in the woods without getting someone whipped into a frenzy.

If you read the actual original news story (as opposed to the frenzied bloggers/ commentators who dropped half the facts on the floor), his office and his wife DID know that he was hiking the AT. They just didn't know exactly where he was or have a way to get in touch with him, which is how he wanted it (and they were fine with that).
State governor is the sort of job where you maybe should check in with your office once a day to make sure the state hasn't blown up or something. But kudos to the guy for his independence and love of nature. If his family's ok with letting him do what he loves on Father's Day, who am I to complain?
And for the record, I'm politically conservative, but the first article I read didn't mention what party he was from... I didn't know or care, I feel the same either way.

I think it is great that a leader is taking time to hike the trail.. The press is making a mountain out of a mole hill.
It is a little ironic.... Wasn't the AT built with funds from a federal stimulus package??
the real question is has anyone seen him on the trail? Has he gone to a hostel? or Town for resupply ? Where did he hike? We need these questions answered.
He was in Argentina, not on the AT.

I have often told more than one politician to "Go take a hike," Glad to know that at least one took my advice. Good for him, more should follow his example. Perhaps the entire US congress will be missing this next week. The whitehouse crew should investigate and follow up on some kind of stimulus.

Well, this story just keeps getting weirder and weirder (or is that "curiouser and curiouser".) Sanford turned up this morning at a different airport than where the state vehicle was, coming back from Buenos Aires. Turns out he wasn't on the AT at all (though he has been on the trail before, apparently.)
Just what he was up to in Buenos Aires is another question.

Ummm why would you need those questions answered? Why is that anyone's business?
So it seems he told folks he "might" hike the trail, then changed his mind at the last minute and went to Argentina instead. I gotta say, I love the spontenaity. Unfortunately I think he's going to find it doesn't work out too well with executive political office. (If he were a legislator, it wouldn't really matter... they're not "on call" 24/7 to the same extent.)
I think it was rather irresponsible of him to tell NO ONE where he was going or at least check in more often to make sure he wasn't needed at home. But beyond that I think he's an awesome human being for his sense of adventure. Most of us just wish we could be that spontaneous. And it's no one's business what he chose to do on his vacation, unless there's strong evidence he did something illegal/ immoral. I wish the press would leave it alone but I know they won't.

HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!! We all got fooled on this one. Guess he was in search of the new southern trail terminus. I heard the AT Conservancy was proposing a change to the start of the trail from Springer to the beach in Buenos Aries. He is done. Whatever the reason the explanation he is done as a politician. Might be done as a governor. But always welcome on the A.T. Governor. On the upside, the A.T. hasn't had this much publicity in a long time. HA HA HA !!! I busted a gut on this one. If I took off without telling my wife, I might as well be hiking the A.T.. that would be the safest place for me. HA HA ! Another tale to be told about the trail.
He was in Argentina, not on the AT.

Oh come on. If you honestly think that heading to Argentina is enough to stop a politician's career, you need to read up on this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marion_barry - In short, caught smoking crack in a FBI sting, spent 6 months in fed. pen, then was reelected as Mayor of Washington, DC. Later was found to have lied on taxes and was caught again with drugs after testing positive for cocaine and marijuana. And is STILL serving in public office.
All this guy did was take an unplanned vacation without telling anyone where he was. He said he needed to spend some time alone after he lost a vote on a key issue he was working on. Maybe it was something near and dear to his heart and he needed the time off. Ever think that maybe he decided to not go hike the AT on the off-chance that someone would notice him and all he wanted was to not be noticed? Who the heck would notice the Governer of a US state in Argentina, unless it was Arnold? Everyone, including politicians, need time off to pull themselves together on occasion.
Is it a little irresponsible to have gone off without telling them where he was going? Sure it was. Is he a human being? Pretty sure he is on that count too. Considering he hasn't claimed to be the Messiah, maybe we should cut him a little slack. When he found out how much of a fuss was being made...he came home and apologized for causing any problems. Why is this such a big deal?

Well, my caveat was more applicable than I would have liked. :( Slight job irresponsibility to clear the head... forgivable. Politician having an affair... distasteful and hurtful to all involved, but they are human too and the American voter tends to be forgiving. Politician neglecting job responsibilities in order to carry on and conceal affair... that raises questions of character and ability to serve. It's going to be a harder pill for even his most loyal supporters to swallow.
Will never sound innocent again. Talk about respect factor soaring and plummeting in a matter of days.
I loved the image of a sitting governor playing hooky on the AT. I guess, cos it is what I would love to do. Alas, he was playing nookie in Argentina.
when he took the governorship. Abandoning his state and his family while he was out fooling around isn't OK, even if he "accepts responsibility" when caught.
AP: Sanford left Thursday and his staff didn't hear from until Tuesday morning.
First lady Jenny Sanford told reporters she had no idea where the father of her four children went during Father's Day weekend. And one state legislator was ready to rewrite state law to make sure governors pass their power on when they go incommunicado.

So he tells his staff to tell people he is hiking the trail, while he is in Argentina with the woman he has been having a long time affair with. Today he admitted all that the girlfriend was more important to him than his four kids on Father's Day. He has now resigned from the Republican something now we need to see if he resigns from office as Governor. Yea, thats what I want for a husband.
Being a section hiker, the oddest thing about this story to me was that it appeared he was hiking the GA section since the last time his phone signal was tracked was near Atlanta. If I were going to hike the AT for a couple of days I wouldn't start in GA, even if I started my drive in Columbia, SC. I guess he was going to the Atlanta airport instead.

I don't know about that, Rain Man. I may not share his political views on all topics, but the man did have political principle (notice the qualifier "political") Any politician who takes on his/her own party in an effort to get that party to act upon the principles which got them elected is alright by me, shared political beliefs or not. He's human. Just wish he hadn't drug the AT into the discussion.
I just think it's is downright funny. Politics su*-*ck that why they are ban here and politicians bl*/*/ow never met one that was worth his or her title, party or whatever.
I just hope he had good taste in bush to hike in.

Sorry, but Marian Barry didn't run on a conservative, holier-than-thou, "family values" platform.
There's a reason Jesus never mentioned homosexuality,-- ever,-- but spoke of hypocrites often and with total disdain.
:D
Rain:sunMan
Ah, I'm not aware of his (SC Gov.) policies or platform, I was more replying to the idea that an unscheduled vacation which turned into an affair was enough to end a politicians career. Marion Barry did run on an anti-drug and reform platform when he started...so much for that huh?
All I'm saying is that politicians have and will continue to recover from worse than this so, it's my opinion that the idea that an affair would be enough to end a career is a bit naive. Could be wrong, since the guy has already stepped down as the head of the Republican Governors Association, but so far we haven't seen anything about him stepping down as Govenor. As to whether he gets reelected, who knows? He'll at least have a book deal and perhaps a made-for-TV movie to look forward to, not to mention the pension that he'll continue to collect for the rest of his life just for being Governor in the first place.

Sanford has resigned from being the head of the Republican Governors Association...
He maybe should hae really spent the time hiking the trail. He might have had time to think about the priorities in his life....

Geez, back in post #53, Hopeful thought it was GREAT that a Governor was on the Trail.....amd the guy's politics didn't enter into it.
But now that we see he wasn't actually the Trail, we can dump on him cuz he's a Republican.
Good ole Hopeful, nice to see nothing changes.
Um, we don't talk partisan politics here anymore, Hopeful. Got it?
I wonder if it was his sister in BA or was he cheating on her as well?
Did the AT recently relocate a section south by a couple thousand miles towards Argentina?

Well at least he admits the problem. I mean hell, we are all human, and he is accepting responsibility for his actions and not trying to blame them on someone else or lie his way out of it.....
This quote from the AP story:
At least one state lawmaker called for his resignation. As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for "moral legitimacy."

I think his news conference should have been:
"Appalachian Trail? You thought I said Appalachian Trail? No no...What I said was I was going on the Argentina Trail.":D
LOL, life is stranger than fiction. Just when you think you've seen it all when it comes to ending a political career, a politician steps up with an even wilder story.

I did say something in post 33 about the irony of Sanford "hiking the trail" built by stimulus money... the politics was just beneath the surface...
but if I ever tell everyone that I am hiking the trail.. I WILL be hiking the trail!
Would have been better if his girl friend was a hiker?

Argentinian tail aside, the real story is the Chief Executive of SC went AWOL for 5 days.

I may be wrong but I do believe that Ensign and Gingrich did the same as well.
Second fake Christian to fall this week. Maybe he should get together with Kate Gosselin. At least she lives near the A.T.
I would like to personally assure everyone that the AT does NOT extend to Argentina.

Way to hide them "dirty" words...........LMAO ROFL!!!
Does "AT" stand for "Argentinian Tryst"?
The Governor of South Carolina tried to practice "Leave No Trace"--but his wife and the press found out anyway! (I guess he must have left a few traces!).
On a serious note, my thoughts and prayers are with the Governor and his family as they sort through this mess and try to figure out what is next.

A few years back, while berating the IAT use of the name "AT," Wingfoot warned us something like this might happen.

"No, honey; I really, truly, honest-to-gosh was hiking the Appalachian Trail - just ask Mark and Smoky the Bear."
"I through-hiked the Appalachian Trail all the way to Buenos Aires!"
"I hiked the Appalachian Trail for five straight days and never broke a sweat (until the trip was over)."
"What do hiking boots and secret trips to Argentina have in common? Both come with strings attached."
"Mark Sanford said it. I believe it. That settles it … NOT!"
"Don't cry for me, Argentina - wait, I mean Appalachia."
"Steak and red wine: breakfast of AT champions."
