View Full Version : Wall on Black Forest Trail
I hiked the Black Forest Trail in PA a few years ago. We started at pine creek, crossed the stream, and shot up a quick (and steep) ascent. When we made it to the top, we were rewarded with a nice view on the left side of the trail. It seemed that the clearing was a slate (guessing here) quarry at one time.
When we picked up our packs, we noticed a wall that was built around a few trees farther back into the woods.
I have two questions:
first of all, is the wall still there?
Second of all, what is your view of someon building a wall in the woods with local stone? Is this LNT? Nothing was taken or left, just moved.
I was not sure if i should be impressed or if i should be mad that someone changed the natrual area... ok it was quarried, but the area is being reclaimed by the forest.
any thoughts?
oh, here is a pic.

Can't quite tell from your post and your pic - is the wall recent construction, or could it be left over from a former settlement (lumber camp, etc.)?

who deleted all the other posts???? :( Were they deemed out of context because it got on a LNT tangent? Were they moved to a different thread?
Yeah, what happened to the posts?
anyway, the stones did not have any moss on them or any plants growing through them, so i think the wall was pretty new. i saw it about 2 years ago, but do not know if it is still standing.
The only plants that grew through the wall were the trees that the walll enveloped.
To be honest, the post was originally in the "other trails" section, but i never got any responses. i figured the LNT angle would get some attention.
oh and by the way, if you ever take that trail, there is no former settlements up there. It is just a nice view and a bunch of rock. the wall was definetly out of place and not historic

I am going off memory here.
There are 2 quarries in this general area - If it is the one I am thinking about, it is the first one you pass at about 3/4 miles after you cross over the footbridge by Hotel Manor and start up the ridge between Slate Run and Pine Creek going towards Algerines WA. You soon start hiking along the old tote road to the left of the ridge - The first Quarry at has a really nice Vista on the left and a wonderful place to dry camp in good weather - I believe this is where the old wall is. If you continue up along the left of the ridge, you will come to the 2nd larger quarry, but I don't recall a great vista here..
I just looked up the coords on Google Earth:
Lat: 41.481587°
Long: -77.508408°
I might take a run over there one of these weekends as I don't remember the wall (I was looking at the Vista), but it has been a few years since I spent much time on the BFT.
I would like the monitors to explain why my post was deleted. My post was not in poor taste or controversial. Maybe I will have to stop being a donating member if I cant post.
Luckily I remember it. Plan to hike the BFT soon. The wall looks nice. Will have to sit on that wall and take a break, maybe even eat lunch or dinner. I understand LNT but a good wall or bench(made out of logs or other natural materials) is not hurting anything.

I will check for you. I remember reading this as well, but there are no soft deleted posts in this thread:confused:. However, please use the report post or PM a mod/admin in the future. It could just be an accident.

You post may not have been in pore taste, but it was certainly poor spelling.

I checked twice in the moderator log and cannot find where there were deleted posts. I do remember reading this though, because I had the same question in mind that Ki0eh had. I think there was like 4-6 posts in there missing? We generally don't hard delete except for a few cases, and most of the mods can't anyway. I'll put a note in to the other admins maybe they can figure it out.

I Mod Other Trails, and don't recall deleting anything in this thread. If I had deleted posts, they would be visible with the reason for the deletion clearly spelled out. The person who submitted the problem post would have received a PM from me kindly asking them to refrain from the behavior that caused the post to be deleted.
