I just watched WJHL (tricities.com) news at 11 and they said two children:eek:, ages 4 & 6 I think it was, was seperated from their parents today and reported missing from Roan Mountain. As of now, nothing online shown. Geeze. Said it's going to be in the 40's tonight.:(

Hope they all return home soon!

Two Kingsport children on a hike with their family Wednesday afternoon have gone missing.
The children, 6 year old Alex Suddeath and his sister 4 year old Heidi Suddeath, disappeared in the Carver’s Gap area of the Pisgah National Forest. The children were last seen by their parents near the old Cloudland Hotel Site. The family arrived at the park around 1:30 P.M. and the kids vanished about thirty minutes later.
The Mitchell County Sheriff’s office is leading the search efforts with the aid of the U.S. Forestry Service, North Carolina State Troopers, Carter County Search and Rescue and several area volunteer fire departments.
Search crews would remain throughout the night.

This is true. Our search and rescue members are there as well as Carter County rescue team and praying they are found asap.
I had to work tonight but will be there tomorrow soon as possible.
Will try to update here if any breaking news develops. Not a good place to be lost at that age, I can just imagine how scared they must be right now. It is chilly but at least the weather is fair considering what it could be there.

Good luck. At least they have a lot of people helping. I just tucked my buggers in and thank God that they are safe and hope tonight they hear them and bring them home too.

in several of the survival type books it says that kids in that age group actually do quite well at surviving...and at that altitude the chances of running into a lion or bear this time of year are slim to none

Unaka Rescue and Forest Service should be in full force right now. I guess they have someone camping up there if they show up.

There are a couple small hiding places all around there. The Bluff and Garden trails, AT, shelter...I just hope they found their way to the rest rooms or the Shelter for the night.

If they went down the mountain, that has to scary for them.

Well I hadn't thought of abduction-I thought they were truly lost. If lost they will survive and it will be just a matter of time before they are found....an abduction a wholly different matter.

I did think of abduction as well, there are lots of sick pups out there, so is a possibility but lets hope not. I can't imagine taking my eyes off my kids at that age long enuff for em to get lost or taken but knowing that area and mountains like I do, I know you can be very close to someone and scream and no one will hear you.

Did they put out an Amber Alert of some kind in case it was an abduction?

I hope it's just a case of lost kids and not an abduction. If they are lost, hopefully they'll be found safe soon.

2. Roan is part of my club's maintenance section.
3. I am heading up to Roan next week to work with Konnarock.

I just wondering how in the world can 2 kids get lost on Roan for nearly 24 hours since it has so much traffic. I want that camping spot. I am just glad that it was simply 2 kids getting lost instead of something scarier.

I was up there this afternoon right after they were found, had to wait quite awhile for them to remove all the mission control centers and rescue equipment. Kids were emotional, were lil bruised , dehydrated and very hungry and cold, but overall did very well considering the rough terrain, the cold temps with nothing but shorts and t shirts. They found the boys crocs where he left them on the trail which led them in the right direction, started yelling and miraculously he yelled back and they follwed sound right to them. They were one mile down from tip top on the AT where they spent a no doubt long, cold and scary night. They are doing fine, they were eating nutter butters, oatmeal coookies an drinking gatorade (during the time the parents were not hugging them lol). Was a good ending to what could have been a tragedy. We spent the entire day all over the Roan until late evening taking pics so I will post them as soon as I can here. They should be awesome as the weather was incredible as was the ocean of pink Cataba`s that are still full bloom but just passing peak. Water gushing everywhere cold and cleanest anywhere as usual.

Seems the kids were getting slightly ahead of the parents while they were hiking and when they did that routine right at the top near old hotel site, parents got there and no sign of kids. I can imagine the panic and heart sinking fear of the worst.

I was there last Sunday afternoon and it was cold and windy. I had capri pants and a windjacket and wished I had a hat. According to the locals, 4 storms had passed the night before. Flowers were beautiful.

My guess is that the kids stayed on the trail when the got to the top, and didn't cut over to the hotel site.

It can happen. I tried to tell my kids to stop whenever there was a fork in the trail, and to periodically wait for us. I also would tell them bedtime stories about being lost on the trail. Whistles, emergency rain poncho, chocolate bars, warm shirt, and water were always part of the story.

you would think that if the kids were on the AT, or the crocs were on the AT, it wouldnt have taken that long for SAR to actually find them. I mean reallly.... how long does it take for a searcher to hike from summit to Carvers gap or summit to Ashley Gap. I would have put 4 runners out, one at each spot and had them walk toward each other. Should have been a rescue in less than 4 hrs, not 24.

But, SAR isnt always the most efficient. When I hiked in 97, I came across a family that the mother had just got burned by a pot of boiling water while cooking dinner. We were about 1 mile from the RPH shelter. SAR decided to cut a clearing at the top of the mountain, cut a trail .25 miles to the campsite from the summit, carrry in battery powered flood lights (it was dark by then), and then carry the poor woman up the hill to the waiting helicopter. The whole ordeal took over 9 hrs. Could have carried her down to the parkway and loaded the helicopter there in less than 1 hr. The SAR crew was commenting afterwards that they were lucky to have gotten her to the helicopter so quickly as the woman was starting to go into shock. DAH !!!! I was in shock too just from watching the whole circus routine.

The last time that I went out and volunteered on a search and rescue in this area I was amazed at these guys. They basically walked the same trail back and forth for three days without once stepping off of it. At night they would ride back and forth on their atv's to get coffee and burgers from the Red Cross, played with their radios and worked all night keeping their kerosene heaters running. I watched them do this for 4 days before they finally found the poor guy (deceased) about 40 yards off of the trail. In other areas of the country there are trained professionals to do these sorts of jobs, but around here they are pretty much a bunch of good ol' boy deer hunter volunteer firefighter types......hearts in the right place, but too fat and untrained to be of much real use.

Tough story, great end result. Lost person behavior - kids were within a mile of point last seen, typical. As for the comments on SAR, I was a member of the GPSAR - Greater Philadelphia Search & Rescue Team, well run, well trained - some teams are better than others. With the right canine this would/could have ended faster BUT I for one and very glad that these volunteers exist. Thanks to all that assisted.

Hey Karo, glad ya got the pics enlarged. I have the original huge ones and many more than I posted if you want them.

The spring is the one at carvers Gap up from the pit toilet, correct.

The stealth trail and cave we found off the right side of the trail as you walk out to Roan high Bluff. Not far from the road on right will see short 'pee' trail and if you go to edge of the ridge there where that trail almost ends you will see to left and down some really nice rocks and the trail skirts the bottom of them out to the cave. Could spend all day playing there for sure.

I was hoping to do a hike from Carvers to Elk park this weekend with my son but having some issues figuring out logistics on where to leave a car (besides on 19E at trailhead as I have many times before) and how to get a ride to Carvers Gap so as not to have to go back up there when we get back. Always hard to find a wheel man when ya need one ! Not sure where that B&B is .3 from trailhead on 19E or which direction its in. I am looking for the phone number Wolf put somewhere on here now.

Maybe I`ll go somewhere else closer to home.

Any info is appreciated.
