Was stationed at WPAFB for a couple years in Dayton. Zaneszille is one of those places I'll never forget! A buddy and I were camping in Zanesville when we heard a high pitched tone when all of a sudden there was a flash and a boom that had my ears ringing for about a week. We walked out our tent only to see the ground smoking not more than 3 feet from our tent. We were just about struck by lightening! Caught one of the biggest catfish I ever have there also!! :D

I've lived in and near Ann Arbor since graduating from college out east, but don't hold that against me. My daughter is now a sophomore at Miami University, so I'm supporting your kids with her out-of-state tuition rates. It would be great if the timing worked out for a get-together in Dayton, Cincy, Toledo or even Columbus around the start or end of a semester.

ZeroC
06-29-2009, 10:25
Yeah, they're pretty vague when i asked what the longest section of the BT was that had minimal road walking. Didn't get much so i went the Columbus Library to look at the maps, yeah, awesome, the maps they have are from 1988, those don't do me much good, i'm sure things have changed.

I've hiked portions of the Buckeye Trail running thru several forests and adjoining. I bike and hike the Ohio Erie & Canal Towpath (http://www.canalwayohio.com/maps/towpath/index.htm)--which is great if you have children and/or prefer a more gentle and non-stimulating experience.

There's beautiful trails along the shores of Lake Erie here and there, and all Ohio State Parks have a network of trails.

Birdwatching is awesome here in Ohio !!!

I am not sure what is around the Ohio River, maybe Redneck knows.

Each and every time I'm out there, I have the problem of comparing it to the A.T. or other scenic trails :(

Southwestern Ohio, born and raised. Currently on east side of Cincy, and am an avid day hiker. Looking to get into backpacking. I organize the O-K-I Trailblazers (http://www.meetup.com/hike-oki/) and we do day hikes nearly every Saturday.

My hiking name comes from my various rules I enforce on my hikes (you'd be surprised how many "hikers" wear cotton and tennis shoes on the trails in Ohio), and like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld, if you can't follow my rules, no hike for you! My name is NOT a reflection of any political or moral belief system.

I would be all for organizing another, however given the lack luster response last time and losing money on the deal i would need a good 20" yes i will be there" responses before putting another hundred bucks down for the space. we could turn it into an event a shake down for hopeful soon to be or future thru hikers. maybe make it the kick off to a weekend in the woods for people to test out thier packing, shelter, cooking ideas then meeting back up monday morning for a recap breakfast or something... just getting ideas but yes i would def. schedule another if enough people showed interest

Many times I've wanted to have my "own" stretch of Trail to maintain, but the closest point is a 5-1/2 to 6 hour drive and it would be too hard.

Very long commute to Maine !

Went to Wildcat Hollow last weekend. so many blow downs I couldn't begin to get through. Going to hit Zaleski in a couple weeks.

The blowdowns aren't bad after the first few hundred yards. While I like Wildcat, it always seems to be difficult to get through. Sometimes I take a saw and take care of some of the minor things on my way.

I really like Zaleski. I think the hiking at Zaleski is more difficult than Wildcat, and there are water tanks at the campsites. It sucks that you have to stay at the campsites, but the H2O also sucks in Ohio, so I'd rather have the water tanks.

p.s. Anyone ever hike at Cuyahoga Valley N.P.?

I almost forgot. The last time I went to Wildcat Hollow, I arrived about midnight and planned to set up camp, get up early and take off. Turns out there was some survivor training camp going on. I walked into the woods for about ten minutes and saw a mound that I have never noticed before. Out of curiosity, I looked around and then found and opening. When I looked in there was a very concerned and kinda scared lookin guy, peering out at me. I apologized and moved on. He was more surprised than mad. Two days later, I arrived at my car and ran into some people from the survivorman training camp. They had just arrived from taking showers in town, and wanted to know if I was the crazy guy that was looking around their friends campsite with a flashlight. I said, yeah, that was me. They then asked my name. When I told them, they said O.K. we'll tell him that you're sorry.
