I recently modified a thermarest compack chair to have a higher back using pack stays from a SMD Traveler and parts from the Tarptent Double Rainbow freestanding hiking pole setup. A side effect of this was less weight in the compack chair.

The modification was relatively easy. I simply cut a slit at the top of the webbing holding the aluminum poles in the chair. After removing the factory aluminum poles, The SMD pack stays fit in easily but they do require something to hold them in place. That's when I added the hiking pole tip end of the Double Rainbow set-up. I slipped them over the end of the stays and tightened this with a taut-line hitch. For now, I simply tied the cords to the hole that was cut in the holders on the chair for the aluminum poles. I will be sewing an attachment point on in the future. I also added a small piece of rope horizontally to add support at the top but I am looking for other ways to accomplish this now.

I attached some photos of the work in progress.
