FYI - I just got off a 2 week section hike NOBO. Sayed at Mount Collins on 6/14. Got to camp about 4PM, put my stuff on logs to dry out and went to grab something from my pack inside the shelter. 15 seconds later, looking back, I found a bear wondering around where I was just sitting.

Bear ended up with my sock, then came back and got my boot (got it back...). Bear had no fear and would drop down to a pounce position if you got aggresive toward it. I hit it with a 3" rock and it just looked at me.

We were forced to eat in the shelter with the gate closed. At one point he sat down in front and just looked at us. He was still wondering around camp in the AM.

I understand a ranger came the following night but, the bear did not show up.

This is common at Mount Collins. It is close to the road, an easy hike for people who aren't serious hikers.
It is scheduled to be rebuit in the fall. No more chain link fence.
This will stop people from putting food out and locking themselfs in so that they can watch the bears.
