View Full Version : Vernon, NJ "Bear Attack".
The "bear attack" described in this story occured very near the AT. The location described is about a mile or so South of the boardwalk near Pochuck Mountain. The bear was probably frightened and knocked the guy down trying to escape, but who knows.

Wow! That is a problem bear. He should learn to eat his vegetables.
Hahahah i just heard about this on the radio. The bear scraped out the lettuce and tomato and made off with the rest of the sandwich. Did the bear also have a hat and a green tie?

Why is this amusing? The bear wasn't 'frightened" but was agressive enough to push the man out of its way, injuring him in the process, to get to a sandwich inside his car.
Now just imagine this bear doing the same to a hiker who is much further away from assistance...
Enough said.

I see that the bear didn't quite manage to wipe the smile off of this guys face.
It can't be too serious - for crying out loud. :p

Articles like this make me crazy...I wonder what really happened???
"..... when a black bear knocked him to the ground, apparently to get to a Quick Chek Italian sub that was sitting in the back of the vehicle.
Rouwendal said he rolled over to see the bear, which he estimates weighed between 300 and 400 pounds, standing over him. After it grabbed his sandwich, Rouwendal said he kicked it several times until it ran away. "
"It was the worst experience I've ever had in my life," he added. "This is a dangerous, aggressive bear."
Why would anyone KICK a bear after it grabbed your food? I can see kicking to defend yourself...but it would seem the bear wanted the sandwich, NOT the man!
:(
I would have to think this was the worst experience the bear ever had in it's life! Sadly, this bear is marked for dead after dealing with "dangerous, aggressive" humans
And I should be around there in 1 week, solo, but without a truck thank goodness. Maybe I should load up on mostly veggies and fruit around Unionville before I head over? Hope not to drip burger bits all on myself prior to camp that evening.
Anyone have the most handy number for who to call if I do happen upon this one or one like him/her around Pochuck?

A little far off the trail, but here's a great place to pick up some bear bait. I'm sure you've been there.

C'mon, Buzz, you know there's no such thing as "enough said" on Whiteblaze. Had he lost something of more significance, like, say, his life, it wouldn't be amusing.
That said, more and more people have been moving to that part of New Jersey, where there have always been bears. That, I believe, more than anything, accounts for the rise in incidents. Happily for hikers, this means that the bears are less likely to hang around shelters and more likely to hang around the trashcans and cars of people who move to bear country and don't bother with food security.
Unless, you know, the hikers carry Quickchek Italian Subs out of town . . .

Yeah, isn't it though?
I love seeing bears and think it is neat that they are still out there but draw the line when someone gets injured. Ever notice someone will always make it out to be the victim's fault?
What's it going to take before people wake up? Some poor little todler getting pullded from her wading pool and killed at the family picnic before people wake up? I sure hope not.
Of course all the nimrods will try to blame the parents at this point.
Sigh.

Sigh.I'm first! I'm first! :bananaYes, leaving a toddler in a wading pool unsupervised would be the parents fault. If the kid drowns or gets mauled by a bear, either way I would blame the parents.

I don't have enough information to blame anyone individually. But it would be interesting to know if the community where the man who was attacked lives has bear-proof trash containers, and whether the property where he was attacked had been properly bear-proofed.
Is that the responsibility of people who decide to move to where bears live? Yes. Yes it is.
If I found out that this was not the case, I could pretty comfortably say that the victim in this case would be the bear, who will, if caught, no doubt pay the price for the mistakes of humans.
Since I do not know the particulars in this case, though, it's kind of hard to figure out who the victim is, and as such hard to sort out blame, if that's what you're into.

Maybe the sub shop will start selling sammiches in bear proof containers. That would be the responsible thing to do.

In 2000, there was that woman who was killed and eaten when she went camping/hiking with her ex. People speculated as to how he got the bear to do that. My guess was that he left her with one of those super sandwiches when he went off fishing.:)

What's going to be real funny is how many Quik Check Italian Subs this guys wife charged on her credit card during the last few weeks.

Oh man. This is terrible. I feared something like this would happen some day and I am saddened to hear my fears were not groundless.
Where do we draw the line eh? One one hand it is wonderful that the animals that our ancestors nearly eradicated are coming back on the other hand we have to be aware that this comes at a price. It's a crying shame that price had to be the life of a small child. :(

Not the bears fault, its the waaaaay overpopulated people problem that we have caused.
That along with the idiot gene allowed to reproduce...... you know leaving the sandwhich beside you where bears live and not watching you child.... maybe this has something to do with the problem.
Its a shame the animal usually gets killed. Kill the stupid people and not only will the animals be safer but the gene pool will be a little safer also.
