Anyone have any idea what kind of spiders these are? They were along the Bartram Trail in GA and are the largest spiders I've seen so far here in the South.

Thx.

What beauties!

Don't know what kind they are, though. How big were they?

The bodies were maybe a little smaller than a golf ball (not counting the legs).

They look like "Writing" spiders...do their webs have a Zig Zag in the center.
I get them around my house up to 3"-4" across.
They seem fairly social as they quickly stop hiding from me, or my headlight.
Gorgeous colors at night!!

You were warned to pick your sleeping bag up off the ground in case spiders climbed inside.

i'm no expert by far, but I looked 'em up several years ago after walking face first into their webs every night. I think it is a garden orb weaver. The black and white/black and yellow ones are the same thing, just a different species. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb_weaver

i've heard em called garden spiders, orb spiders, writing spiders, or in the south "drawrin" spiders. They're harmless - but you may shriek like a little girl when that giant thing ends up on your nose on your way to the privy... The webs are thick and wide - and take hours to get off of you. Fun...

Almost positive it's a species of the "Orb Weaver Spider?" They come in shades of brown, red and green! Very common throughout Georgia. So the web says?? :-? Here's the "browner" and most common species in Georgia! Hope this helps?? :sun W-W

Is that because they like to hide in your drawers??

It's a type of Orb spider. They re-build their webs every night. Pretty fun to watch.
