3 miles or so when I did the Benton MacKaye Trail and finished at Standing Bear Farm hostel. :)

I recently did the Tahoe Rim Trail (photos coming VERY soon )..and I found the BMT to feel more remote and wild FWIW.

Sorry I thought the original title said "latest section hiked" due to typos in the original and pre-corrected subject line. :)

Most hiked section of the A.T.?

Probbaly Main St, in Hanover, as thousands of people cover it every single day of the year, many of them noeither knowing nor caring that they're walking on the Trail.

Other well-trod spots:

Newfound Gap in the Smokies would have to be up there, as well as Clingman's Dome. Likewise, the piece of Trail immediately adjacent to the summit of Mt. Washington. The stretch around Bear Mt. also gets some very heavy traffic, likewise Harpers Ferry. Downtown Damascus also get plenty of visits, tho mostof these are in spring and summer.

Least travelled section?

That's a good one. Probably one of the more remote sections of Maine, or maybe just North of Lehigh Gap in PA; unless you like the surface of the moon, there's not much there to recommend it.

You probably need to clarify if you are talking about folks hiking or people getting out of their car and strolling down an urban section.

Lots of hikers make the trip from VA311 to McAfee Knob. I was there on a weekend and had to wait my turn (about 15 minutes) to get the famous photo dangling over the edge.

Most - Smokies

Least - not sure

Most would probably be either in Smokies or Shennandoah NPs. They fet millions of visitors each year. I would also second Jack's mention about Bear Mtn, NY. The trail goes through the zoo there. That has to be pretty high traffic area.

Least traveled??? I will throw out 3 sections in the smokies, due to remoteness.
a) Doe Knob to Mollies Ridge
b) Thunderhead to Derrick Knob
c) Pecks to TriCorner Knob

I hiked that section of the AT 2 weeks ago. Highly recommend it. (midweek) less chance of getting run over by a bicycle.

The Powerpoint presentation for the Bear Mountain rebuilding project says that 200,000 people a year use the AT between the parking lot and the top of the mountain. Hence the rebuilding. That's got to be up there for any non-paved section.

The least hiked section for me, at least from now on, would be Pond Flats. I discovered the blue blaze to 391 that comes out right near the Icehouse sallon.

Whenever I tell thru-hikers that I am section hiking, they inevitably tell me if I am prioritizing, do this PA section last or not at all.

Interesting, since that's actually one of the first sections we're doing (because it's close and easy.) But I understand it's also quite rocky. :(

it is always good to start close to home... some just live close to sections that are more interesting* than others

*define interesting to suit your needs :)

Broadly speaking, central Virginia and southwest Virginia, west of I-81 (except for the beauty spots).

Uh, that would be the least-travelled areas. Others might be right about some of the very short sections.

I think Jack hit all the really high-use areas. Since I live here... Harpers Ferry National Historical Park gets 250,000 - 300,000 visitors a year; most of those walk on the A.T.

The only section that I have done more than once on the AT is Roan Mt to Carvers Gap or vice versa. Simply because I live close and visit Roan Mt alot.

The section that I will not do again (which isn't what you asked) is Katahdin. That hike terrified me.

...that would be the least-travelled areas.

Out of curiosity, how is this measured or estimated?
