View Full Version : Phish Festie and Hiking!!!

So my two favorite things in life are coming together... Phish and hiking!!!Phish has announced an upcoming "Save the Date" Festival over Halloween. However, in normal quirkyness, they've decided not to tell us where the event will be held and instead offer us a map of the US, and are using some interesting techniques to eliminate states off the map until I assume we are left with the location of the event... If interested you can follow the State removal here: http://www.phish.com They seem to update with a new round of eliminations each night around 8pm. So far we've seen a sailing ship harpoon and pull away a few states, we've seen god come down from the clouds and blow a few states away, fire ants devour a few states, etc...

Anyway, since Halloween is less than 4 months away, most heads are getting antsie and want to know where it is so we can make travel arrangements. Hense, a great amount of rumour'd sites and speculation has narrowed the possibilites down to either Indio, CA or Dateland Air Feild outside of Numa, AZ... Personally, i suspect it will be in the Southeast, but we'll see.

Now to the point.... Supposing the speculation is correct, can anyone make some suggestions of some good hiking locations around either Indio or Numa... Looking for something in a 3-5 day hike range. From maps, Indio is beside Joshua Tree National Park, any suggestions are welcome!

thanks

Oh and Hooch, deadhead wannabe's??? I believe most listeners to improvisational music would agree that both are splendid in their own way... Personnally, i've seen more dead shows than phish, but enjoy each equally, just differently...

I grew up going to dead shows... Some of my earliest memories as a child are at dead shows... My bro and I did our first summer tour when I was 15 and he was 16 in an old dodge camper van my dad had.. Both the summers of 94 and 95 we spent following the dead... Good times... Then in 97 I reluctantly gave Phish a shot and have been hooked since...

I've also seen more Dead shows than Phish shows. 1 Dead show (1991, Orlando, FL), 0 Phish shows. I'm pleased with that ratio and it shall stay the same throughout the end of time.

Maybe asking alot, but preferably less travelled, uncrowded trails?

OK- I had never seen or even really listened to Phish prior to this year's Bonnaroo. But they do a good job of getting the audience into the trance and thus (like the Dead) sell out shows across the country.

They are not my thing (the jams are usually too long) but have a few songs that I like but to discount them because they are not the Dead is just wrong.

No there is not another Jerry Garcia but that does not make Phish bad. They are the new generation's "Dead" and they do a pretty good job.

In 20-30 years, there will be another band to pick up the baton. The Dead are good, Phish is good, Widespread Panic is good...deal with it. Music from across the decades can exist together.

Sorry for not offering trails to hike. I would just hike then fly to the location of the concert if I were that committed to the band.

Great! There are few of us that are willing to try new music and are willing to broadcast it!

Most try to say music from the previous generation is better but it is just different and they diss it based on their beliefs.

I like some Phish songs, I like some Grateful Dead songs. My favorite is Jimmy Bufett and I like a lot of his songs but not every one. But I go to his shows to see the songs I like and experience the show.

I've seen Buffett an number of times and love the vibe of the Parotheads... Those folks go extreme when it comes to decking out their camping rigs!

Like you, I simply love music, straight from the Beatles, Elvis, CCR, Doors, Zepplin, ACDC, Matalica, PJ, Nirvana to GD, Phish, moe. SCI and any other band that can move my feet.. Blue grass and new grass has been my recent fav... Got plans to see Sam Bush later this summer and can't wait!

Anyway, over the years travelling all over for music i've gotten into the habit of incorporating my musical trips into extended vacations to do some hiking. Your already someplace you normally don't go, so why not take a week or two extra and see the sights?

i don't not like them because they're not the dead. i don't like them because they suck. and their fans come to my town, tear the place up because they're freaking out on more drugs than their bodies can handle, then die in the parking lot from said overdose. sounds like a great band to follow. seriously.

Dead fans did this too. Just that there were less drugs available. (just a number. Not quantity just variety.)

I agree that there are too many drugs in the Phish scene, but it I don't remember it being any different on the Dead tour either. Both have/had great scenes, but like anything, there are problems, and in the music scene, those problems revolve around drugs...

Such as??? When was your last phish show? When was your last dead show? It's been my experience, outside of a small group of hardcore's, most Deadheads have adopted the new breed of jamband with little complaint... Different sound, same scene...

I gotta say, other than new types of drugs showing up every year, everything else seems pretty much the same...

Nothing like fresh cut grass, a hot sun and tunes that touch your soul!:banana

What an odd statement... It would be the same as me saying I don't like pizza because it's not French Fries... It's fine that you don't like Phish, but not to like them because their not the Dead???? So since Jerry died have you stopped listening to all music because it's not the Dead?

Are you aware that the Dead are touring again, and minus a few flubbs and the obvious hole left by Jerry, they sound pretty sweet... I hope they continue because the few show's i've seen have left me wanting more...

Oh and Phish started in the mid 80's with influences like the Cars, Prince, Michael Jackson, The Police, The Who, etc, etc.... Not the Dead... Also the remaining members of the Dead and members of Phish have joined forces to play together a number of times... Clearly they have mad respect for one another. It's a shame some of you folks can't seem to get past yourselves long enough to simply enjoy good music!

But to each there own....

Did the bookmarks on my computer somehow change themselves and I'm at the Judgemental Conservative Hikers Club of America's website or something?

Seriously, the guy asked about hiking trails around the location that he THINKS the band might wind up at. What do your personal judgements about his taste in music and life have to do with that? No one cares if you like or don't like Phish, if you do or don't like hippies. Do you know of any good hiking trails in the locations that he asked about?

News flash, but some people (myself included), don't take ANY drugs and still enjoy jam bands, including the Dead AND Phish. I haven't touched any type of drug outside of prescribed antibiotics since before I joined the Marine Corps in 1998. Kanga complains about stoned Phishheads wrecking the town, LW complains about stoned hikers ruining his town. Did you ever think that not EVERY SINGLE person who hikes or listens to a certain band is a drug addict? Are you a drug addict? Do you listen to a certain type of music? Do you wreck stuff every time you walk into a new town? If you don't do those things, then not everyone does.

Sure, some people get drunk, stoned, tweaked, or whatever and do dumb stuff. They do that regardless of where they are, what they are listening to, or what they are doing. Just because you listen to a certain type of music or follow a certain lifestyle doesn't automatically make you a bad person.

DAJA, I don't have any suggestions for you, sorry. The only hiking I did in SoCal was when I was in the military, so all of those trails are on military installations. You can try to get on there, but you might be met with a bit more resistance than even most WBer's provide. :D

Ok, perhaps I took your words out of context, but I have seen you rail about "stoners" who bring drugs into The Place. By "your town", I meant the town where you live, not that you own it.

From everything I've read that you've posted, you have a bad opinion towards drug-users and hippies. Am I wrong about that?
