hey all, im a noobie, wanting to start a 4 week section hike this weekend from erwin. on uncle johnnys website, it says parking is 2 bucks/day but previously read that it was free. does anyone know the safest and cheapest way to leave your car in erwin?

If it was last weekend, I could have taken you since I was going to Roan.

Parking is free if you take a shuttle using Johnny's. Which direction are you wanting to go?

i just called uncle johnnys and they said $2/day and the trail can be hit 70 feet away (so I dont see why I would need a shuttle)

btw, im leaving northbound this weekend from erwin for 2 weeks and coming back 2 weeks to pick up my car; i wish i could go in one direction for the whole 4 weeks but i cant figure a cheap way to come back to erwin without having to do a loop

i had another question; my friend wants to meet me 5 days before i arrive back in erwin; where would be a good place for him to park, meet me, and hike on down back to erwin to get my car? Roan mountain?

thanks

Roan to Erwin is really only 2 days hiking, 19E to Erwin would be about 4 to 5. I wouldn't park at 19E though, Mountain Harbour is right down the road (.3 miles) and a safe place to park, but it's 5 bucks a day, well worth it for safety IMO............:)

I left my truck in front of the trail crossing by UJ's for 3 days last summer. Didn't pay anybody.

Just an idea...go one way for the 4 weeks. Figure out about where you plan to end and have you friend park there and get a shuttle from there to wherever you are 5 days from the finish line. You and friend can hike back to his car and drive to Erwin and pick up your car. Depending on mileage, that would get you around the Pearisburg area to finish. Ask here on WB about where to have him park and possible shuttle arrangements in that area. (I don't know)

You could even call him as you got closer to the date and fine-tune where to meet you since your progress might be faster or slower than you anticipate at the start.

On another note, if your friend drops you off in Erwin, you don't have to worry about parking, and don't have to drive back to pick up that car.

What I do is park my car at an outfitter and get them to drop me out of town and I walk back to my car. Not the cheapest but I avoid the loop hike.
