A warm July night. A full moon. A 3 mile r/t hike. Stone furniture overlooking the town below. And cocktails. What could be better?
I love full moon hikes. And like to make them a social occasion with an appropriate theme. Last month, it was the "Strawberry Fullmoon" so I packed in the fixings for strawberry sundaes and made well..sundaes on the summit.
This past full moon? The theme was "Cocktails by the Moonlight".
The rules were simple. No beer. No wine. Bring the mixings or pack in a cocktail. Being summer, and a bit of classic guy at heart, I brought in the makings for a gin and tonic. Ice. Gin. Tonic. Lime. Is there a better summer cocktail?

Two Triple Crowner schmucks. D-low being his usual polite self. I'm the dork in the theme appropriate Hawaiian shirt.
Other people brought in fancier drinks (ala Sex and the City) or went to their college roots (Rum and Cokes, Sex on the Beach). One woman brought in homemade sangria! Not QUITE a cocktail..but who was complaining? Other people went the classic route, too. Scotch on the rocks for example. Can't go wrong!

Some of the people on the hike were a bit more attractive than the two guys above!
At the old quary site, there is stone furniture overlooking the town. The group of us pulled a seat (metaphorically speaking!), mixed our drinks and mingled.
The moon rose and illuminated the area around us. Despite the late hour, no one wanted to leave. Eventually, all good things comes to an end.

At midnight, Markhamm turned the big 4-0. Woo! He hike the AT in 1993 IIRC and about half the PCT in 1998 IIRC as well.
We walked (staggered?) back down the trail and basked in the moonlight. The view of the Flatirons in the full moon is always impressive.
All the photos (have not loaded them on my website yet...)
