I was hopeing somebody has tried a flea and tick collar. I was wondering if it would work to keep the ticks off. Maybe around the ankles would work?

Don't try it. This fact sheet (http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/documents/FACT/18-009-0306Flea_and_TickCollarsJTF-March2006.pdf) explains why.

Thanks Roland. I guess I won't be putting one around my neck. But, What if I took a two inch piece and put them on my shoe laces? Do you think that would keep those ticks at bay?

I carry garlic for this. When ready to hike, crush a clove and smear it around the ankles, wrists and neck. This will keep ticks and fleas away. Has worked for me for over 20 years.

How often do you need to reapply?

You're probably not bothered by vampires either, right? :D

For me usually once a day, however if it rains or I sweat heavily then I apply it once more. It provides a barrier that the bugs do not want to cross. As long as the barrier is there, it will work.

Better to treat your clothing with permethrin and use DEET.

The garlic useage seems like a good idea. Kind of a multipurpose item. If the bugs aren't bad, I could add some into my ramon at night. I might have to try this.
