View Full Version : Newfound Gap to Mt guyot
I was wondering how accessible mt guyot is by road. I will be going either NOBO or SOBO between Newfound to Guyot or vice versa. I only have from mid day saturday to mid day the following monday to do this (labor day wkend). I would just go from Newfound to Davenport but I don't want to stretch it too much. Any comments would be helpful.

Your easiest access nearest to Guyot would be the Cosby Campground...

long day hiking from cosby up to tri corner shelter via snake den hard pull up snake den ridge. if you go up to cosby knob via low gap you'll have to make it all the way to pecks Sunday too far,or stay at tricorner then hike out all the way to Newfound gap monday. also too far
sobo is only way
still not very suitable unless you do icewater spring Sat then the long hike over to tricorner then head down snake den ridge to cosby.

Actually alot of people hike this nobo as the elevation gain is much less when you start at Newfound Gap. I would hike from NF to Pecks on Saturday (5-6 hours), and then to Tricorner Sunday, and down Snake Den early Monday. You could be down early afternoon if you leave early enough in the morning from Tricorner.
I know several people who have done this as a dayhike in the summer as the climbing isn't too bad. Once you have hiked the first mile and half or so to Sweat Heifer, you have done most of the climb.

Actually, you can go from Pecks to Cosby Knob in a single day. It is a longer mileage day, (about 16 miles) but you are doing a ridge walk most of the way. From Cosby Knob Shelter, it is about 3 miles downhill into Cosby Campground.

You can hike the Balsam Ridge Trail from the BRP to Tri-corner.

Sounds good. Thanks for all the good responses! I've got a few freinds that are headed up to pigeon forge that weekend and my original plan was to just get dropped off at either newfound gap or in the guyot area. I've been through the area a few times but I still need to get a set logistical outlook on it so I can be sure they'll be able to find me. You should have seen there faces when we all got to talking about going to a freinds house and I jumped in and said "hey! can yall drop me off in the smokies??!" They knew what was up it just came out funny.
