I just heard that the secret shelter is closed. Reportedly, the area still open for camping & water is avalable.
I hate to hear this, even tho I won't be in NY for quite a few years, it looked like a nice place. I strongly suspect, like many neat places along the AT, it was closed due to over use &/or misuse by hikers.
Olistery Pavillion comes to mind. In 83 Hikers were welcomed to STAY there, now its "OFF LIMITS TO HIKERS!" We cant even go near it.

I was lucky enough to reach the O'Lystery Community Picnic Area (I think that was the "official name") the evening of one their monthly get togethers. When they saw me they fed me like I was a king. I still have good memories about the people there.

i think the secret shelter is more geared towards winter. It was closed when I was there in May. The place is amazing though!!

Not that it makes a ton of diffrence but I believe the secret shelter is in NJ not NY. If it's closed it really makes not diffrence at all.

It's in NY, but you leave the AT for it in NJ.

The secret shelter in New Jersey is not much of a secret since it is written up in the hiker books. The secret shelter in Vermont is much more of a secret. I hope it stays out of the books. It is a nice place.
I know one in Rhode Island. It's a loooooooong blue blaze from the AT :D.
There's a real secret shelter in Maine, on a long abandoned section of the AT. An overseer of the section once asked me if it was still there. It was. But I didn't tell him. Nor will I tell you where. That's the thing about secrets. If you tell folks, it's no longer secret.
A few fishermen know this particular secret shelter's existence. They walk the stream that "runs through it." Old time hikers may guess. But, if so, then they should do what I did, go and look. It's easy. Bushwhack an overgrown trail, chase along a stream, circle a beaver flowage, and there it will be!

You're a cruel man, Weary. I want to find it for myself. I wish now I bought that old Maine AT guide on ebay.
