View Full Version : Trail Access via car at NY/NJ state line
I'm looking to complete NJ which means hiking "north" of High Point. I know the trail weaves in and out of NY so I'm looking to start out at the very last part of NJ and head "south" to High Point. I want to leave my car at the ranger station @ HP because it's always been a safe spot. I will have someone drive me to the other end. BUT where would I access the AT? It looks like near Greenwood Lake somewhere but where exactly?
RT 17A outside of Greenwood Lake. There is a pull off there but I wouldn't leave a car there. It's kinda isolated and I saw fresh broken car glass there last year when I did a section hike through NY. If you need to park at that end of the trail park in town. I parked next to the Police station but ask first, it was a 4 mile hike down the road to my car after hiking all day. Hope this helps and enjoy your hike!
Also if you hire a shuttle they will know exactly where to drop you off. If you have someone else take you there you will head out of Greenwood Lake on 17A uphill for 4 miles or so, the AT is pretty much at the top of the hill. There is a wide pull off and an AT sign at the road. Check out this link for parking info:

They say the trail is 2 miles north of town on 17A. It sure seemed like 4 the day I hiked it!
Don H, thanks for the info. By the way I just completed the MD section last week. It was a beautiful part of the AT and nice and easy on the feet.
Your welcome! Yea, MD is nice, I did it years ago as a kid and have done a few miles in the last two years with my son's Scout troop. Lots of history to check out along the way. Enjoy your hike and let us know how it went.
Going to take on PA this fall hike PenMar to Dunccannon Pa section hike it in 3rds, NJ and NY after that. Anyone know if a train runs out of NYC to any spot on the NJ side I know of the one to Pawning NY

There also a train that stops at the "appalachian trail" train station. Which is on the same line as Pawning but one or two stops up.

You can also catch a train that runs out to Port Jarvis. From this line I think you can get pretty easily to High Point also. If you get off a bit earlier on that same train line you can hop on the trail near Agony Grind on the At as it enters Harriman State Park. There are also buses that will take you from NYC to Bear Mt.
As far as trail access at the NY/NJ line there is also a parking lot by the marina on Greenwood lake and from the lot the State-Line trail ascends up to meet the AT it is about a mile a fair climb.
