I am pretty new to getting back into hiking. Did A lots of hiking about 15 years ago in the scouts but my question to you all wise WBers what type of layering system or amount of clothes would I need for a end of August hike from Amicola to neels gap? Also will a mountain hardware 45 degree bag be sufficient?
Thanks!

Doesn't cool down here in VA until October.

Might get cool at night. Bring a long sleeve shirt. A waterproof shell might be enough. The bag should suffice.
In August in N. GA it will be hotter than you care for it to be. IF it gets a little cool at night, consider yourself lucky and enjoy it. Minimal need for cold weather clothing. Ditto what Gray Blazer said.
You need minimal stuff. Most likely it will be hot during the day (duh) and still very warm at hiker midnight. Sometimes after a shower it cools down some. Shouldn't need rain gear because you can't avoid getting wet.
Your first set of clothes will likely be/get wet and stay that way. Besides what you're wearing on the trail, have a set to change into when you stop. I bring a light windbreaker to put on but only rarely need it.

You are only going to be on trail for what, 3 or 4 days? Right before the trip, check the long range forecast for cold fronts or tropical activities. If none of these are on the horizon, you won't need much warm clothing or bomber raingear. Maybe some light insulation (100 wt fleece) and a rain jacket or better yet, poncho. :)

I have hiked that section and on to Fontana in August. I only carried a GI poncho liner as sleeping bag. I wore nylon running shorts and tee shirt while hiking and carried a long sleeve polypro shirt for night and a poncho for wind or rain. I only recall being cool once. I also was using a tarp and not a tent.

I rode my bike up Brasstown Bald a few mondays ago and it was 49 degrees!.....at 2:30pm!!!! The weather has been weird here over the last month, unusually cool for summer so I would check the forecast just before you leave. Usually it is hot as hell with 100% humidity July/August but we have had a nice break from that lately. Hope it stays cool for you.....

Yeah the weather has been weird in my hometown as well. My problem has always been overpacking going on trips so I am really going to try and carry just the necessities but with enough for a change in the weather.
